John Smith's second book, Book the Second, Containing Twelve Anthems and Twelve Psalm Tunes appears to have been published in 1751. While the book is not dated, it was advertised as 'Just Publish'd' on p4 of the Salisbury Journal of Monday 12 August 1751. The Hymn Tune Index notes that both this and Smith's first book, A Set of Services, Anthems and Psalm Tunes, were advertised in the Reading Mercury on 13 November 1752.

The title page of Book the Second, Containing Twelve Anthems and Twelve Psalm Tunes identifies the composer's residence as 'Market Lavington'. The imprint gives the place of publication as 'Lavington', and states that the book was 'Printed by the Auther and Sold by him at his house by Mr. Johnson in Cheapside London by Mr. Collins Sarum Mr. Boddily Bath Mr. Burrough Devizes &c &c &c.'. The book was published by subscription: the subscribers include William Knapp.

Description of contents

The collection consists of twelve anthems, and twelve metrical psalm tunes. The psalm tunes are mostly in four parts, with the tenor and alto parts both printed in the treble clef an octave above sounding pitch. The anthems are for various voicings.
