Description: Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote Die erste Walpurgisnacht for Carl Friedrich Zelter, who took up its composition in 1799 and again in 1812 without completing the cantata. In 1830 Goethe offered it to Felix Mendelssohn who composed a version in 1831 and published its revision as Opus 60 in 1843.
