General Information

Title: Falalalán Falalalera
Composer: Anonymous (sometimes attributed to Bartomeu Cárceres or Mateo Flecha el Viejo)

Number of voices: 4vv   Voicing: SATB
Genre: SecularVillancico

Language: Spanish
Instruments: A cappella

Published: 1556 in Cancionero de Upsala.

Description: This work appears without mention of the composer in the Cancionero de Upsala, but is often attributed to Bartomeu Cárceres or Mateo Flecha el Viejo. The reason for attributing it to the latter is that this piece is very similar to Flecha's Riu, riu, chiu, in the same Cancionero de Upsala. On the other hand, there exists also an exact contrafactum of this piece with a (much longer) religious text by Cárceres in the Cancionero de Gandía.

English.png English translation

Falalalan falan falalalera
Falalalan as the shepherd herds
Falalalan falan falalalera
Falalalan as the shepherd herds

When I come home from herding the cattle
Everybody calls me Pedro the recently married
Yes that's true as I am with the master's daughter
and this little ring she gave me
Falalalán falán…

There high up in Val de Roncales
There I have my food and my firestones
And my little haversack made of deer skin
There I make my fire and I feel at home
Falalalán falán…

In Lent I don't eat anything
I don't eat sardines, nor salted food
What I actually want nobody makes
Bread crumps with oil set my teeth on edge
Falalalán falán…
