Gradualia II (William Byrd)

The second volume of Byrd’s liturgical music for the major feasts of the Church’s year includes complete Mass propers for Christmas, Epiphany, Easter, The Ascension, Pentecost and SS. Peter and Paul, as well as some items for Corpus Christi and the Votive Mass of the Blessed Sacrament not included in volume I. Considerably better-organised than its predecessor, it is able thanks to the more self-contained nature of the feasts involved to abandon the "transfer" scheme employed for the Marian masses in volume I.

First published in 1607, it was reprinted in 1610 with new covers bearing the entirely fraudulent claim that it has been newly revised. The dedicatee is Byrd’s great patron John, Lord Petre of Writtle.

Publication date and place: 1607 by Thomas East in London.
