Earlier discussion from 2007 and prior

IN GENERAL, I think I might be inclined to re-order the page. Although all but the most inexperienced contributors will know to check first to see whether there is already a composer page for the composer, it seems to me that checking for a composer page and a works page would be the first items of business. More specifically, in item A:2, in the short term, replacing the phrase "ignore the reference to images", with an explanation that on CPDL, "images" is the term used for all uploaded files, whether they be sound, notation, or graphics files. In item A:5, I'd replace the recommendation of a specific number of letters for the composer and work title with the recommendation to use the first few letters of each. There are, after all a few composers who do not have four letters in their surname (Henry Lay and Arnold Bax, though I don't know of any choral work by the latter), and it might be useful in some cases to have more than four characters for the title, to allow for the case where more than one composition might have the first few letters, for example, settings of "Ave Maria" and "Ave Maris Stella".

I wouldn't reproduce the template for the composer page; I'd make sure it's locked, and link to it to open in a new window.

In the case of graphics and notation files I'd add the suggestion to create a dummy file, with the identical name as the page that will be contributed, but with no other content (except perhaps the phrase "in preparation"). This dummy file is then uploaded for the purpose of obtaining the CPDL edition number. When the CPDL edition number is obtained, it can be added to the graphic or notation files, and the real file uploaded, so that a user who downloads the notation or graphic file can determine the edition number at a later time.

If you had designated the sections by number instead of by letter, I'd suggest making the current section "E", (which if numbered would be "5") section "0", as I think it would be beneficial to ask for help before rather than after uploading files. Section 0 would advise the potential contributor to do some research to obtain as much information about the composer and work as possible before beginning the uploading, and providing information on how to solicit assistance in the event of doubt or uncertainty about how to satisfactorily complete the process.

Finally, in view of recent events, someplace there should be advice to save copies of the files you contribute, the pages you created or altered, and response pages from CPDL. -- Noel Stoutenburg 0753 GMT 21 August, 2007

  • Upon further reflection, contributors who upload scores, or make significant contributions to content in CPDL should be advised to keep archive copies of their work on their own machine. In my case, I have most of my scores, but neglected to keep accessible copies of most of the content. -- Noel Stoutenburg 0315 GMT 29 August, 2007

Here are some edits. This will be very useful to CPDL Editors - especially for their first post

Edits reference section and subsection:

A-5

Add: Be sure to only use alphabetic and numeric characters (hypen and underscore permitted also) in the new file name to save as.

A-6

Add: If no copyright is mentioned it will be assigned the CPDL general copyright

A-8

You will see a special page with heading "Image:[your filename]" eg. "Image:Valls-ale.pdf" and under the heading you see: Valls-ale.pdf (67KB, MIME type: application/pdf) (your name and file size will be different). ** The filename will be a hyperlink to the file you just uploaded. RIGHT-click on this - write down file size for later use - then select "Properties". **

Replace last sentence (denoted by ** above ) with following text:

The filename will be a hyperlink to the file you just uploaded. Write down the file size (ie: 67 K), and then RIGHT-click on this filename hyperlink - select "Properties" from the pull-down list tht appears. A new window will appear. Write down the file name that appears (beginning with http:// ) for later use (or cut and paste file name to a text file so you can easily copy this info into the "Add Works" form in Step C: below.

A-9

Replace with:

The example file name above is: http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/images/b/b8/Valls-ale.pdf If typed into a browser "Address" entry line it would bring up your PDF file into your browser window.

B - 5 (Sec. IV)

Isn't this the format that we ae using ?

   ==Life==
   Born: 18 December 1835
   Died: 22 October 1922
   Biography

If it isn't I must have missed that decision ...

C - 3 (Sec. V)

Ignore this box (Four instances)

Wouldn't it be more political to say: "Not currently used - for future use - leave blank"

Voicing (i.e. SATB) Add: Make sure your voicing is included in list: Category:Voicing so it can be categorized.

ADD: Add the field to form: Lyricist or Lyric Attribution: First-name Last-Name (birth-yr. - Death Yr.)

uploaded in step I. 9. above <--- substitute: uploaded in step A-1 thru A-9. above

Type the language of the text. <- -- substitute: Type the language of the work's lyrics.

Type the size of the PDF in kilobytes. In Windows, you can obtain this information by right clicking on a file and selecting "Properties". <--- Add: You may have noted this in step A - 4 above.

Select "CPDL" to licence your edition under CPDL licence, enter Personal to retain copyright for yourself, or edit specifics of terms of use of score eg. "for non-commercial use". <-- substitute: "for religious purposes only" ( clearer example )

The code will be produced and displayed on the next page. <-- Add: It may be useful to copy this code output to a text file for future reference. It will be invaluable if CPDL Administrators need to help you with your posting at a later time.

D - 6

Add: Save your file, with the "Summary:" box stating the following text: "Page needs cleanup"

Many thanks to both of you for your comments. I have implemented all you your suggestions, John, except the following:

  • "Voicing (i.e. SATB) Add: Make sure your voicing is included in list: Category:Voicing so it can be categorized."
-- I think that the user should type out the voicing as it is, using the guidelines that I outlined, without being confined by CPDL's categories. If the voicing "SSSSAATTTTTTBB" doesn't exist and their work has that voicing then I believe that they we should make a new category.
  • "ADD: Add the field to form: Lyricist or Lyric Attribution: First-name Last-Name (birth-yr. - Death Yr.)"
-- Unfortunately, I can't change the add work form as (despite appearances), I don't think it acually is a wiki page. In any case, to the best of my knowledge, only Raf can edit the form.

I'll get onto your suggestions tomorrow, Noel, as I'm rapidly working into my valuable sleep time! Thanks again. --Bobnotts talk 07:10, 21 August 2007 (PDT)

This is looking brilliant & really helpful - thanks a lot

About to start making use of it all! MandyShaw 03:50, 13 October 2007 (PDT)

Thanks for the encouragement! No problem at all - happy to help. --Bobnotts talk 07:31, 13 October 2007 (PDT)

Minor wording change suggestion

 Help

Would it be clearer to put "Omit" in the "Required?" column instead of "N/A"?

Also, it would help make the discussion threads clearer if this were organized like the CPDL user forums, using the ItemPost template to visually delineate different posts.

 Help

Yes on both counts! I really do like your suggestion about using Template:ItemPost for comments on talk pages - it never occurred to me when I wrote that template (for Bulletin board postings) that it could equally well serve the visualization of posts on Talk pages. -- Chucktalk Giffen 02:31, 27 July 2008 (PDT)

clarification request: "will be posted in 24 hours" is no longer true

  • Posted by: Vaarky 13:22, 28 July 2008 (PDT)
 Help

The help page says: "Submit the form - copy the posting output to your text file. Ignore the statement that the code will be "posted within 24 hours" - this is no longer true."

If it's not true that the code will be posted within 24 hours, does that mean that it's posted within minutes? Can we clarify this so people have a better item of what timelag, if any, to expect and at what point to panic?

Add work/edition form should link back to this help page

  • Posted by: Vaarky 13:28, 28 July 2008 (PDT)
 Help

http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/form/work.htm should have a link on it indicating that clarification about how to fill in the fields on that page ca be found on this page. A mere mortal can't edit that page, so I think an Admin needs to do that.

Filename convention

The paragraph "A standard convention on CPDL is to have the file name as follows: "[first few letters of the composer's surname]-[first few letters of the work title]". For example, the upload of a PDF file of a Villancico by Francisco Valls, "Alegres mudanzas" would have the following filename: Valls-ale.pdf" is an anachronism from the time when filenames had to be short. Can we please abolish this in favor of a more liberal system, as [composer's surname]-[work title]? —Carlos Email.gif 12:07, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
