IN GENERAL, I think I might be inclined to re-order the page. Although all but the most inexperienced contributors will know to check first to see whether there is already a composer page for the composer, it seems to me that checking for a composer page and a works page would be the first items of business. More specifically, in item A:2, in the short term, replacing the phrase "ignore the reference to images", with an explanation that on CPDL, "images" is the term used for all uploaded files, whether they be sound, notation, or graphics files. In item A:5, I'd replace the recommendation of a specific number of letters for the composer and work title with the recommendation to use the first few letters of each. There are, after all a few composers who do not have four letters in their surname (Henry Lay and Arnold Bax, though I don't know of any choral work by the latter), and it might be useful in some cases to have more than four characters for the title, to allow for the case where more than one composition might have the first few letters, for example, settings of "Ave Maria" and "Ave Maris Stella".
I wouldn't reproduce the template for the composer page; I'd make sure it's locked, and link to it to open in a new window.
In the case of graphics and notation files I'd add the suggestion to create a dummy file, with the identical name as the page that will be contributed, but with no other content (except perhaps the phrase "in preparation"). This dummy file is then uploaded for the purpose of obtaining the CPDL edition number. When the CPDL edition number is obtained, it can be added to the graphic or notation files, and the real file uploaded, so that a user who downloads the notation or graphic file can determine the edition number at a later time.
If you had designated the sections by number instead of by letter, I'd suggest making the current section "E", (which if numbered would be "5") section "0", as I think it would be beneficial to ask for help before rather than after uploading files. Section 0 would advise the potential contributor to do some research to obtain as much information about the composer and work as possible before beginning the uploading, and providing information on how to solicit assistance in the event of doubt or uncertainty about how to satisfactorily complete the process.
Finally, in view of recent events, someplace there should be advice to save copies of the files you contribute, the pages you created or altered, and response pages from CPDL. -- Noel Stoutenburg 0753 GMT 21 August, 2007

Many thanks to both of you for your comments. I have implemented all you your suggestions, John, except the following:

- -- I think that the user should type out the voicing as it is, using the guidelines that I outlined, without being confined by CPDL's categories. If the voicing "SSSSAATTTTTTBB" doesn't exist and their work has that voicing then I believe that they we should make a new category.

- -- Unfortunately, I can't change the add work form as (despite appearances), I don't think it acually is a wiki page. In any case, to the best of my knowledge, only Raf can edit the form.

Yes on both counts! The help page says: "Submit the form - copy the posting output to your text file. Ignore the statement that the code will be "posted within 24 hours" - this is no longer true." If it's not true that the code will be posted within 24 hours, does that mean that it's posted within minutes? Can we clarify this so people have a better item of what timelag, if any, to expect and at what point to panic? | |

Filename convention
The paragraph "A standard convention on CPDL is to have the file name as follows: "[first few letters of the composer's surname]-[first few letters of the work title]". For example, the upload of a PDF file of a Villancico by Francisco Valls, "Alegres mudanzas" would have the following filename: Valls-ale.pdf" is an anachronism from the time when filenames had to be short. Can we please abolish this in favor of a more liberal system, as [composer's surname]-[work title]? —Carlos
