John Naylor

Biography
John Naylor was born in Stanningley, Leeds, England. He was a chorister at Leeds Parish Church, studied organ under Robert Senior Burton, and became deputy organist at Leeds Parish Church. He graduated from Oxford and was appointed organist at St. Mary’s, Scarborough, then St. Michael’s, Scarborough. In 1883, he was appointed organist of York Minster and remained there until his retirement in 1897. He was the conductor of the York Musical Society and was appointed an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music. He composed a number of oratorios, church services, anthems, part-songs, pieces for organ, and a book of chants. Two of his children went on to be organists and composers: Edward Woodall Naylor and Charles Legh Naylor. He died while on a voyage to Australia and was buried at sea, between Tenerife and the Cape.
