Biography

Marcos Coelho Neto was the name of two Brazilian musicians, father and son, both also composers. Coelho Neto, Senior, was born in Vila Rica, 1740 and died in 1806. He played horn and clarion, and also participated in the production of operas and dramas. His son Coelho Neto, Junior, also played the same instruments. At the age of 24 he composed the hymn Maria Mater Gratiae, one of the most renowned works of the Brazilian Colonial music. In the light of new researches, he is being credited most of the manuscripts that were believed to have been composed by his father.
