Clementine Vulgate (Psalm 20)

Latin.png Latin text

1  In finem. Psalmus David.
2  Domine, in virtute tua laetabitur rex, et super salutare tuum exsultabit vehementer.
3  Desiderium cordis ejus tribuisti ei, et voluntate labiorum ejus non fraudasti eum.
4  Quoniam praevenisti eum in benedictionibus dulcedinis; posuisti in capite ejus coronam de lapide pretioso.
5  Vitam petiit a te, et tribuisti ei longitudinem dierum, in saeculum, et in saeculum saeculi.
6  Magna est gloria ejus in salutari tuo; gloriam et magnum decorem impones super eum.
7  Quoniam dabis eum in benedictionem in saeculum saeculi; laetificabis eum in gaudio
12  quoniam declinaverunt in te mala; cogitaverunt consilia quae
non potuerunt stabilire.
13  Quoniam pones eos dorsum; in reliquiis tuis praeparabis vultum eorum.
14  Exaltare, Domine, in virtute tua; cantabimus et psallemus virtutes tuas.

Douay-Rheims Bible (Psalm 20)

English.png English translation

1  Unto the end. A psalm for David.
2  In thy strength, O Lord, the king shall joy; and in thy salvation he shall rejoice exceedingly.
3  Thou hast given him his heart's desire: and hast not withholden from him the will of his lips.
4  For thou hast prevented him with blessings of sweetness: thou hast set on his head a crown of precious stones.
5  He asked life of thee: and thou hast given him length of days for ever and ever.
6  His glory is great in thy salvation: glory and great beauty shalt thou lay upon him.
7  For thou shalt give him to be a blessing for ever and ever: thou shalt make him joyful in gladness
with thy countenance.
8  For the king hopeth in the Lord: and through the mercy of the most High he shall not be moved.
9  Let thy hand be found by all thy enemies: let thy right hand find out all them that hate thee.
10  Thou shalt make them as an oven of fire, in the time of thy anger: the Lord shall trouble them in his wrath, and fire shall devour them.
11  Their fruit shalt thou destroy from the earth: and their seed from among the children of men.
12  For they have intended evils against thee: they have devised counsels which
they have not been able to establish.
13  For thou shalt make them turn their back: in thy remnants thou shalt prepare their face.
14  Be thou exalted, O Lord, in thy own strength: we will sing and praise thy power.

Church of England 1662 Book of Common Prayer

English.png English text

1  The King shall rejoice in thy strength, O Lord : exceeding glad shall he be of thy salvation.
2  Thou hast given him his heart's desire : and hast not denied him the request of his lips.
3  For thou shalt prevent him with the blessings of goodness : and shalt set a crown of pure gold upon his head.
4  He asked life of thee, and thou gavest him a long life : even for ever and ever.
5  His honour is great in thy salvation : glory and great worship shalt thou lay upon him.
6  For thou shalt give him everlasting felicity : and make him glad with the joy of thy
countenance.
7  And why? because the King putteth his trust in the Lord : and in the mercy of the most Highest he shall not miscarry.
8  All thine enemies shall feel thine hand : thy right hand shall find out them that hate thee.
9  Thou shalt make them like a fiery oven in time of thy wrath : the Lord shall destroy them in his displeasure, and the fire shall consume them.
10  Their fruit shalt thou root out of the earth : and their seed from among the children of men.
11  For they intended mischief against thee : and imagined such a device as they are not able to perform.
12  Therefore shalt thou put them to flight : and the strings of thy bow shalt thou make ready against the face of them.
13  Be thou exalted, Lord, in thine own strength : so we will sing, and praise thy power.

King James Version

English.png English text

1  The King shall joy in thy strength, O Lord; and in thy salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!
2  Thou hast given him his heart's desire, and hast not withholden the request of his lips. Selah.
3  For thou preventest him with the blessings of goodness: thou settest a crown of pure gold on his head.
4  He asked life of thee, and thou gavest it him, even length of days for ever and ever.
5  His honour is great in thy salvation: honour and majesty hast thou laid upon him.
6  For thou hast made him most blessed for ever: thou hast made him exceeding glad with thy countenance.
7  For the king trusteth in the Lord, and through the mercy of the most High he shall
not be moved.
8  Thine hand shall find out all thine enemies: thy right hand shall find out those that hate thee.
9  Thou shalt make them as a fiery oven in the time of thine anger: the Lord shall swallow them up in his wrath, and the fire shall devour them.
10  Their fruit shalt thou destroy from the earth, and their seed from among the children of men.
11  For they intended evil against thee: they imagined a mischievous device, which they are not able to perform.
12  Therefore shalt thou make them turn their back, when thou shalt make ready thine arrows upon thy strings against the face of them.
13  Be thou exalted, Lord, in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power.

Metrical New Version (Tate/Brady)

English.png English text

The king, O Lord, with songs of praise
Shall in thy strength rejoice;
With thy salvation crown'd, shall raise
To heav'n his cheerful voice.

For thou, whate'er his lips request,
Not only dost impart;
But hast with thy acceptance blest
The wishes of his heart.

Thy goodness and thy tender care
Have all his hopes outgone;
A crown of gold thou mak'st him wear,
And sett'st it firmly on.

He pray'd for life, and thou, O Lord,
Didst to his prayer attend;
And graciously to him afford
A life that ne'er shall end.

Thy sure defence through nations round
Has spread his glorious name;
And his successful actions crown'd
With majesty and fame.

Eternal blessings thou bestow'st,
And mak'st his joys increase;
Whilst thou to him unclouded show'st
The brightness of thy face.

Because the king on God alone
For timely aid relies;
His mercy still supports his throne,
And all his wants supplies.

But, righteous Lord, thy stubborn foes
Shall feel thy dreadful hand;
Thy vengeful arm shall find out those
That hate thy mild command.

When thou against them dost engage,
Thy just but dreadful doom
Shall, like a glowing oven's rage,
Their hopes and them consume.

Nor shall thy furious anger cease,
Or with their ruin end;
But root out all their guilty race,
And to their seed extend.

For all their thoughts were set on ill,
Their hearts on malice bent;
But thou, with watchful care, didst still
The ill effects prevent.

While they their swift retreat shall make
To 'scape thy dreadful might,
Thy swifter arrows shall o'ertake,
And gall them in their flight.

Thus, Lord, thy wondrous strength disclose,
And thus exalt thy fame;
Whilst we glad songs of praise compose
To thy almighty Name.

Káldi fordítás (20. zsoltár)
