Renaming proposal

It has been requested that this composer page be renamed to Gallus Dreßler. I notice, however, that various composers that traditionally take a ß in their German names, are spelled with ss in the English Wikipedia: Friedrich August Reissiger, Hans Leo Hassler and Jakob Hassler, among others. Valentin Haussmann can also be written as Haußmann, but the German article prefers the form with ss. The one exception we currently have is Manfred Hößl, who is a living composer and edits his own page here. I particularly think that ss is easier to type than the Eszett, but would not oppose to such a change if others decide for it. —Carlos 18:18, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

I would prefer the spelling Gallus Dreßler – and thus requested the renaming; mainly because ß is a proper German letter, similar to the umlauts or e.g. accented letters in Spanish or French. Since pages like Heinrich Schütz, Camille Saint-Saëns and Tomás Luis de Victoria are named containing these special characters, I’d like to see the ß for the Dreßler page (and other German composers having an ß in their name) as well. Nonetheless, the pages should be available to an audience having difficulties to type ß or umlauts on a non-German keyboard; thus, I suggest to keep the page Gallus Dressler with a redirection to Gallus Dreßler. —Gereon (talk) 12:17, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

No problem for me, but I'd like to hear others on this. In fact it's not just the composer page that will have to be renamed, but all the works pages too. For Hans Leo Hassler, that'll be a lot of page moves.

Another point to consider: the rules on using the Eszett varied considerably over time. What shall we do if it's used in modern spelling but not in the composer's time? —Carlos 21:38, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
