Title

Starting a title with double quotes is not recommended. I suggest an alternative title Gloria all'Egitto (Triumphal scene from Aida) (Giuseppe Verdi) or something in that line. —Carlos 20:52, 16 March 2015 (UTC)

It could be even shorter: Gloria all'Egitto (Aida) (Giuseppe Verdi). The quote marks make it obvious that it is an excerpt identified by its incipit rather than a title. Is there a technical resin to avoid the quotes? Richard Mix (talk) 19:18, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi Richard. In this case a disambiguation is not really necessary after the title, it could as well be simply Gloria all'Egitto (Giuseppe Verdi). Browsing through categories Operas and Arias I have the impression that this is the most common form. As for the quotes, the problem with starting a title with them is that they break up the sorting order in categories, and make a work not findable when someone types e.g. Gloria all in the Search box. That makes sense. I do think making a separate pages for excerpts searchable/identifiable by the larger work is highly desirable, whether parentheses are used or not. There seem to be various ways this has been done, not all of them terribly pretty: Humming Chorus (from 'Madame Butterfly') (Giacomo Puccini), Brindisi from La Traviata (Giuseppe Verdi), He watching over Israel (No. 29 from 'Elijah') (Felix Mendelssohn), Messiah: No. 45 - I know that my Redeemer liveth (full score) (George Frideric Handel), [O] Isis und Osiris (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) redireting to Die Zauberflöte, K 620 (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart).

• In general lines, I prefer to see explanatory comments enclosed in parentheses, to avoid confusion with the title itself: Lift up your heads (from Messiah) instead of Lift up your heads from Messiah. A comma may also work fine: Gloria all'Egitto, from 'Aida'.
• If some kind of quotes is deemed necessary, I usually favor single over double quotes, but again that's just my personal taste. Parody masses are a mess in this respect: we currently have Missa ..., Missa "..." and Missa '...'. A standardization here would also be welcome.
• As for having a single page for a larger work (with alternative titles as redirects), or breaking it into separate pages for each movement, both solutions are fine by me. For some works, a single page may suffice, but not for others that have too many movements (the Messiah comes to my mind). —Carlos 04:28, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
