English text
1. Jerusalem, with gates ajar,
The clam'ring rabble from afar,
Throng'd street and lane, ere rising sun
Had scarce proclaimed the day begun:
And Calvary's Mount, at dawn of day,
O'er hung with mist of morning gray,
Saw long before the setting sun,
That victory o'er death was won.
2. Then crown'd with thorns, the Nazarene,
And bearing cross with face serene,
Toil'd up the stony ragged path,
Scoff'd by the jearring rabble's wrath:
Of garments stripp'd and cast by lot,
He bore their stripes and faltered not.
Then nail'd upon th'accursed tree,
He gave His life for you and me.
A darken'd pall the land o'er spread:
the sun was changed to crimson red:
The rocks were rent all nature sighed,
when Christ our Lord was crucified.
3. Golgatha, with its whiten'd bones
Now echo'd back the Saviour's groans;
A darken'd pall the land o'er spread:
The sun was changed to crimson red:
"'Tis finished!" and He heav'd and sigh
"Eloi lama Sabachthani!"
The rocks were rent all nature sighed,
When Christ our Lord was crucified.
