Text and translation templates

To Bobnotts Hi, am very new to all this stuff here, find things out and do things wrong, do not now how to contact people and find that, when I do something there is a certain Englishman, named Bobnotts, who adds "templates" whatever they are! Flags in my language. Dutch, maybe double dutch!!!! Now he moves my texts, looks neat! All of a sudden I tried the talk thing out, saved the page and thought whatever will be will be and there: you're reaction, GREAT. I already tried to mail you but it was send back to me. Read your page and hope you know how much you can drink!!!!

I could not get the text in the sore page, although I pressed the save page knob 3 times. Got fed up and left cpdl and my pc. Got back later and still found the text in "my text box. Had not disapeared!!! Then I pressed the safe page knob again and off it went in the score page. Clear enough to you now? To get a reaction from you, I put the text back! Haha!

How and where do you get the templates. You must be a miracle here on cpdl.

getting an image on a page

Hi bob,

Try reuploading the file as Properties_box.jpg (lower case .jpg, not upper case .JPG). Then use something like

[[Image:Properties_box.jpg|left|Sample Properties box]]

to display the image. I hope it works!

30 januari 2007 hello, here I am again. Hope in the right place. There is something funny with the German templates you put into "my texts". Mendelssohn songs. No "flag" but horrible THICK letters. Tried to draw your attention to it when I altered it, but it is still there. kind regards.

Yeah thanks Geertje I noticed. There's a problem with the German flag image on the server and that's why it's not displaying when the template has been added. When the image has been corrected, everything should display normally again. See this discussion thread for more details. Nowowiejski & Grzegorz Miskiewicz

Hi again, Bob; I just saw you requested deletion for Nowowiejski, which seems only right; however, on the other hand, I think this is a submission by a Polish composer who might need some help here on CPDL. Indeed, the page has been created by Grzegorz_Miskiewicz, whose Composer page could use much tidying up, as you can see. But still, the files linked to from his page are very much real, and the page for which you requested deletion is nothing else but an (admittedly buggy) reference to what seems to be a Polish version of “Stille Nacht”, the all-time favourite Christmas carol: check which obviously is the link the contributor meant to put on that page, and not the silly URL http://www.cichanoc.pdf/ (still, that is rather funny, I think, because it looks like a real URL from far away). By the way, from my very weak knowledge of Polish, “Cicha noc” indeed means “Quiet night”, so »Stille Nacht« in the original German.

Anyway, that particular page must still be deleted, and the (correct) reference has to be added on Stille Nacht (Franz Xaver Gruber); but, more importantly, I feel we have to contact the contributor and help him out with the process of submitting scores on CPDL, because he seems to have very much good will in contributing here. -- Arthur 2007-02-23 06:24 CET (05:24 UTC)

What manner of thing is this?


You did some work on the Thomas Ravenscroft Page, about which you wrote in the change comment that you "reduced the page size".

what exactly does this mean?


Noel, this means (exactly!) that I have substituted the links for pdf and midi icons ("" and "") for {{pdf}} and {{mid}}. These two templates take up substantially less space than the whole link so it will be quicker for users to view the page and quicker for users to edit the page. Just commenting in passing: the actual gain in disk space on server is nothing, I think, compared to the benefit users will have in editing the page, because it looks so much nicer. So thank you anyway, Bob, for this idea! -- Arthur 2007-02-25 07:12 CET (06:12 UTC)

Canons (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart)

I'm not sure I agree with what you've done with Canons (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart): you put a redirection to point it to Category:Canons, but it's really not the same, since the Category page lists all canons (of course!), and the former page should list only canons by Mozart; which I think is rather useless, since to my knowledge Mozart's canons are by far not as numerous as Bach's cantatas, and I see no reason to have a standalone page only to list them, not to mention a special category. So, the page should be deleted, shouldn't it?

Well, actually, there's more to it: if you look back in the past you see that it has been added as a Work page for one particular score [1], but then the link became invalid [2] which it still is the case as of today. But on the other hand, the submitter, Jurriaan Grootes, did submit many other files, for example Psalm 13, Op. 27 (Johannes Brahms), and there the external link is perfectly valid. And guess what? If you follow the link you find Mozart's canon there; the correct URL is now

Yes, I've just reviewed the page myself. I was removing some double redirects and didn't look properly at the page history. Yes, absolutely, restore the page to its original state (as a score page) and correct the link. John Rutter

Hi Rick. As John Rutter's music is still under copyright, it is illegal to reproduce it with permission. This includes photocopying, scanning, re-typsetting, etc. CPDL is a place for public domain music (Choral Public Domain Library), or music which is released to the public without charge by modern composers. I would advise you delete the Sibleius file of the Rutter work as I suspect it is illegal for you to possess it and I suggest that you refer to the information on copyright law in the CPDL help pages, here. If you have any questions about copyright, please ask them on the forum and someone will try to help. Please don't be put off by these restrictions as to what you can and can't typeset - there is plenty of good music in the public domain (and much of it better than Rutter's, in my opinion :-) ) Regards --Bobnotts talk 06:39, 26 July 2007 (PDT)

My Music

I added some of my own music to CPDL and it still hasn't appeared on the site yet. What do I do and who do I need to speak to to correct it? Rick 23:44, 26 July 2007 (PDT)

Hi Rick. If you clicked on "Add scores to CPDL" (link on the left) then "Add Choral Work, or New Edition" then completed and submitted the form then that information will be in a backlog which Rafael Ornes, the manager of this site, receives. Your score eventually be posted but don't expect that time to be soon. A quicker method of submitting your music is by copying and pasting the code which comes up when you click the button at the bottom of the form. This code should be pasted into a new page with the title in the following format: Your work title, Op. x, (Rick Miller) . If you did not record the code which apeared, please don't re-submit the same work as this would duplicate the CPDL number. In your future submissions, however, this is the best course of action. To achieve that effect, first you must split the stave in between the versicle and the response. To do this, select the dividing bar line then choose Layout --> Break --> Split System. Then, to hide the bars in question, select them then select Layout --> Hide Empty Staves. I hope you're successful! Regards --Bobnotts talk 02:11, 31 July 2007 (PDT)

I have split the bar but it the staves will not "hide".

Sorry... of course that didn't work. What you really need to do(!) once you've split the system is deselect everything then follow the menu selection here. Then click at the beginning of the stave and it should disappear. Then select 5 lines (singers) where you want it to appear again. These "staff type changes" can be moved like normal objects. Unfortunatly, it has to hide the bars that are used as well as the ones that aren't used like this.

More reconstitutions

Hi David. I've sorted out the page in question. There actually were/are 2 reasons why your score page doesn't show up on the main page list under the correct date. The first is that the template on the page actually had the wrong date on (it previously said {{NewWork|2007-06-15}} rather than today's date). Secondly, the templates and other pages which need to be created to make the list display correctly have been lost in the crash and have yet to be restored. This seems to have happened very recently--like within the last 48 hours or so--so you may not be aware of it, but the entire "Composer subcategories" page has been converted to Chinese and been marked for deletion. Thanks for pointing this out... there were a number of pages created by a spammer with 1 letter different from Composer Subcategories so I marked them all for deletion and failed to notice the real page! Will the time be worthwhile?


Thanks for your message. It would be nice to have a chat. I have so far done no more than update editions which are already on line.

It is going to take me half a day to a day to restore everything that I put up between the last backup and the crash and I am still not clear that if I do this the material is not going to get lost again in the next crash.

Hi Jonathan. I know the feeling. The work that I've been doing last night and this morning has been to improve the Mendelssohn page and the associated page which lists his works ordered by opus number. I've just backed up the code for these pages but if the server was to crash again in the next 5 mins, I would lose all the work that I've been doing to move all the score pages to have the correct opus number in the title (and that stuff's impossible to back up). I'm going to put a bit more pressure on Raf over the next week to actually have a more effective backup system because I know a lot of people are angry at losing all their work (myself included). I would advise you and anyone else in your position to hold off putting your scores back on CPDL not because they may be lost again in a similar crash (unlikely but possible) but because it may actually force Raf to communicate with people about the nature of the backup system and what he's doing to improve it so we don't have this problem again. Elgar Score - The Spirit of the Lord

Hey Robert,

I'm busy working on the score from the scan you sent me, and, not being an organist or pianist I've run into several questions: ( I've uploaded the partial score so you can reference it ) See

1. In measure 1 - Bass Accomp. I couldn't express it in Sibelius as in score. Is this OK ?

2. The score says "Piano" for Accomp. - Shouldn't it be Organ ?

3. In measure 4 - what is the "L" and the ------- line indicate ?

4. In measure 14 there is an indication of "HORN" - on a piano ?

5. The beginning is labeled "Prologue", shouldn't measure 16 indicate a sectional change, or is the whole thing "Prologue". Is the work part of a larger work ?

6. Do you know the date of composition ?

7. As an accompanist, is there any voicing that would be more clearly notated in the Accomp. ?

8. Feel free to point out any typos so far - the work so far has not been proofed.

Hi John. All that I knew about "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me" is that it is the first part of Elgar's oratorio The Apostles, so I checked out the Wikipedia article which is good. Hopefully that will answer your questions about the work. As for your other questions, I'm afraid that I'm not a pianist or organist either so I can only guess!
  1. I can't figure it out either... what you have written out is correct but obviously overly complicated. I'll keep looking for a solution in Sibelius.
  2. It's a reduction of the orchestra parts as this is a vocal score. I'd have it as organ.
  3. I can only guess that that is for left hand... but then that doesn't really make any sense when you look at what the left hand is doing - it's already busy.
  4. It's an orchestral reduction.
  5. Yes, it is - see Wikipedia.

  8. You seemed to have missed a few notes in bar 3. I'd recommend that you make the small notes in the score small in your edition to indicate to a pianist/organist that he should only try to play some, not all(!), of them, but point out to the director that those are notes played by the orchestra. Also, the title of the movement is "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me", not "us".

I never really considered doing the whole of the oratorio as it's so long. I suppose the reason that I suggested this movement to you is because it seems to be sung as an anthem in its own right in the Anglican tradition. Hi Robert, I can't type-set measure 32 of this work. I have never seen triplets like this. Can you help ? Finally figured it out - very weird triplets: first is a quarter-note triplet to start (then you change note values within the triplet, the other two start as quarter note triplets, and then you edit new values into the notes of the triplet. Hi Robert, I can't type-set measure 46 of this work, again in the orchestral reduction. Its the vertical curved lines (I guess to show you briefly hit the bass note, and then jump up to the upper 3 notes.) what is it signifying, and how would you express it in Sibelius ? John, I would ignore the curved lines in the organ part of bar 46... they probably mean what you suggest (I don't know either) but aren't suitable for an organ, I think. As for the bracket in bar 24 (connecting the dotted minim and tied semi-breve), I suspect that it suggests to the pianist that the notes should be played with the same hand but that's a guess as well... sorry I can't be more help, as I say, I'm not a pianist or organist. --Bobnotts talk 06:34, 10 August 2007 (PDT)

Thanks Robert. BTW I've decided that it will have to be a piano accomp. in the score. I'm not familiar enought to separate out a pedal part, and there is too much piano-specific stuff in the score as it is. Perhaps someone more familiar with organ can rebuild the score later... Hi Robert! Well, the preparation of PDF, Sibelius 4 source, and MIDI files are "done" for the piece. Now it just needs a good proofreading, and my tired old eyes are just not up to this job ... John, I've just looked through the first page of the score and noticed a number of errors. If you don't have the time, I will look through the score but it will be at a later date. I tend to think that it's better to finish the job yourself then it would be in a better state for another person to proof-read rather than correct obvious errors. The errors that I've noticed so far are below but are by no means the only ones:
  • bar 2 RH bottom 2 notes of the chord should be small
  • bar 3 RH 2nd quaver middle note of chord incorrect
  • bar 3 RH 2nd triplet small note incorrect
  • bar 3 L------¬ missing
  • bars 6-9 missing phrase marks
  • bar 8 dim. should be cresc. instead

I've just proofread the first page again. I am confident that the following is a complete list of errors:
  • Bar 5 - LH bottom note of chord should be bottom F rather than A flat
  • Bar 6 beat 3 - LH missing note in first quaver chord
  • Bar 7 beat 1 - RH lowest note of the chord should not be small
  • Bar 9 beat 1 - RH top F should be G
  • Bar 9 beat 1 - LH bottom note of chord should not have any accidental
  • Bars 9-10 - cresc. is written out as well as hairpin. only 1 is required
  • Bar 10 beat 2 - RH top note should be top F, not E
  • Bar 10 beat 3 - RH voice 2 "alto" should be a crotchet rather than 2 quavers
  • Bar 12 beats 1 & 4 - LH "voice 1" should be in line with the RH, not with the acciacatura of the 2nd LH "voice"
  • Bar 13 - RH E should not have any accidental as it is tied from the previous E natural
I have corrected your Sibelius file and the altered version is here. May I suggest that your "one last time" isn't sufficient? Some of the errors above are minor but some are rather important. Hey Robert, I think you proved you can proofread much more effectively than I ! By the way the Bar 13 edit doesn't "play" correctly in the file you mase The "tied" whole note plays one half step too low. This is why I added the natural to the whole note E in the next measure. I don't see how you can "tie" two notes together when there are two extra beats with notes on them after the first tied note. I take this curved line in the score to be a phrase line, not a tie. Hi Arie. Well done on completing the alphabetical list. Now the only thing to do is move all the pages that have incorrect titles so that they do. If you could check the "what links here" list (accessable under the toolbox menu on the left) before (or after) moving a page, then correct the links as appropriate, that would be great. Also, it is useful to the admins if you mark redirects which don't have any links to them for deletion. It isn't good on a wiki to have lots of extra unused redirects sitting on the system and distorting searches. If you want to start working on something yourself, I've found that the best place to do that is on a user subpage (see Wikipedia's explanations - here). Links to scores on composer pages

Hello Robert, Brian Russell here.

Hi Brian. I've just editing a page that you recently edited, Thomas Greaves to remove any links to scores (your edition or the other), leaving just the italicised text "2 editions available" in line with CPDL general conventions. In the case of there being 2 or more editions of a work available, the relevant entry on the composer page should not be accompanied by links to scores but instead just a notice which tells the user that they will have to follow the link to the score page for a choice of which edition to use. The only exception is when the editions are by the same editor in which case there may be a preference chosen by the editor.

I was doing just that a bit ago, and was politely chewed out for it. Hmmm... Oh, well... Since I'm going to add rather a large amount later this week (likely another 100 pieces), I'll go ahead with editing the composer pages in line with that convention.

Incidentally, I've recently created a PDF from one of your scores and uploaded it to CPDL and made a link to it from the edition page. It is here. I hope that you approve. Best wishes, Robert.

I didn't want to delete the PDFs, but I have somewhat limited space on my site, and am working on a new edition of the English Madrigalists Series (without Stainer & Bell's intellectual property - the editorial markings like barring & accents, dynamics, etc.), and along with various other bits of Renaissance vocal music, really couldn't afford the space.
