General information

"Vere languores … Dulce lignum" is a widespread motet text, the first part drawn from Isaiah 53:4-5 (c.f. Messiah No. 22), and the second part resembling verse 2 of Crux fidelis. The opening verse, as far as "portavit", appears as an antiphon in the Solesmes books, which also have a longer Tract from Isaiah for Votive Masses of the Passion.

53:4a  Vere languores nostros ipse tulit
et dolores nostros ipse portavit
53:5b  cujus livore sanati sumus

Dulce lignum, dulce clavos, dulcia ferens pondera

English.png English translation

53:4a  Truly, our failings he has taken upon himself
and our sorrows he has borne
53:5b  By his wounds we have been saved.

O sweet wood, O sweet nails that bore this sweet burden
which alone were worthy to support
the King of heaven and Lord.

Italian.png Italian translation

Davvero Egli portò le nostre sofferenze
e si fece carico dei nostri dolori,
dalle sue ferite siamo stati guariti.

Dolce legno, dolci chiodi,
dolci pesi da sopportare,
voi soli foste degni di sostenere
il Signore e re dei cieli.
