Binst het stille van den nacht

Dutch.png Dutch text

Wie, wie heeft toch, laat mij weten,
in den hoogen hemel, dáár,
u doen hangen zonder keten,
wonder' zilvere lampe klaar?

Wie, wie heeft het vat gesmeden,
en den krans erom geplooid,
waar gij al de lieflijkheden
van uw lekend licht uit strooit?

Koele lichtstroom, die alomme
't mos beplekt en 't hoofdtje zwicht,
't slapend hoofdtje van de blomme,
die in 't mos te rusten ligt.

Zilverboot, die, dóór de wolken,
peerlen draagt en elpenbeen;
kostbaar vaartuig, dat de volken
voert onschatbaar edelsteen,

met geen goud noch met geen hoopen
van al wat de grond besluit
ooit vervangen of te koopen:
slaap, dat edel balsemkruid!

English.png English translation

Who, o who, do tell me
hung thee up, high up there
without a single chain,
you wond'rous silver lamp?

Who, o who forged the barrel
and who formed its beak
whence thou pourest all this bliss
from your flowing light?

Cool stream of light,
that covers moss and tilting heads,
tilting heads of flow'rs around you,
sleeping in the moss about.

Silver bark that carries
pearls and elp across the sky
precious boat that brings all of us
priceless precious stone

And yet no gold nor heaps
of that which earth brings forth
can replace or even buy your load:
sleep, that blissful balm for man.

Gebenedijd zijt gij

Dutch.png Dutch text

Gebenedijd zijt gij
en onder alle vrouwen
't zijn wien of waar dat 't zij
eerbiedig aan te schouwen.
O Moeder Maagd die Jezus draagt
eerbiedig aan te schouwen

Gebenedijd zijt gij
vóór eeuwen uitverkoren
Gij moeder, ook van mij,
daar God is uit geboren.
O Moeder Maagd die Jezus draagt
daar God is uit geboren.

English.png English translation

Blessed art thou
amongst all women
and no matter who or when
has only to adore thee.
O mother and virgin,
that bore the Saviour
we're only to adore thee.

Blessed art thou
elected before all times
thou mother, mine as well,
that gave life to God himself.
O mother and virgin
that bore the Saviour,
that gave life to God himself.
