General information

William Marsh's A Set of New PSALM & HYMN TUNES Composed in a Familiar Style was published in 1816 (the preface is dated, as noted below). The title page describes the composer as 'William Marsh, Canterbury', and states that the book was published in London, being 'Printed & Sold for the Author by James Peck 47, Lombard St. Sold by the Author Palace St. Canterbury.'

The preface to the collection states:

'The Author of this Work begs permission to acknowledge the obligation he is under to Mr THOMAS CLARK of Canterbury (Whose Compositions are so highly distinguished by Public Approbation) for his kind assistance in correcting the HARMONY for Public inspection.

July 1st 1816.'

The collection consists of 25 hymn tunes: all have texts underlaid, and in many cases alternative texts are also suggested (often from the Old Version or New Version metrical psalms).

Publication date and place: 1815 by James Peck in London.
