A Set of Services, Anthems and Psalm Tunes (John Smith)
General information
Publication
John Smith's first book, A Set of Services, Anthems & Psalm Tunes appears to have been published in 1746: the book is not dated, but an advertisement in the Salisbury Journal on 9 May 1746 refers to 'A new Book of Divine Musick, for Country Choirs', by Smith, apparently this collection.
The title page states that the book was 'Printed for the Author, & Sold by him at his house in Market Lavington, by B. Collins Sarum, R. Baldwin in The Isle of Wight, T. Burrough in the Devies, &c. &c. &c. The Whole Engrav'd by Phillip Herbert'. The book was published by subscription.
Publication date and place: 1746 by B. Collins.
Description of contents
The collection consists of four through-composed settings for Morning and Evening Prayer, eight anthems, and twelve metrical psalm tunes. The settings are mostly in four parts, with the tenor and alto parts both printed in the treble clef an octave above sounding pitch. No indication is given of any instrumental accompaniment.
