Ardo, ma l'ardor mio grave e profondo,
cui non m'è rivelar, donna, concesso,
quasi novo Tifeo, chiuso et oppresso
sotto il gran sasso del silenzio ascondo.

Pur del mio foco [or.: de l'incendio], ond'io tacito abondo
qualor freddo e tremante a voi m'appresso,
son faville i sospir[i]; e 'l foco espresso
scopre ne' muti sguardi Amor facondo.

E se si strugge in cieca arsura il core,
l'occulta face, ch'ho ne l'alma accesa,
chiaro mostra negli occhi il suo splendore.

Così tetto talor, cui dentro appresa
nemica fiamma sia, l'interno ardore
fuor per l'alte finestre altrui palesa.

I burn, but [as] I am not allowed to speak,
milady, of my heavy and grave fire,
I, almost a new Typhon, hide it under the great stone
of silence, having enclosed and estinguished it.

Yet of my fire, which silently consumes me
as I, cold and trembling, approach you,
sparks are my sighs; and the voiced fire
reveals in silent gazes a fecund Love.

And while my heart suffers in the blind, scorching heat,
the hidden ember that burns in my soul
clearly displays its splendour through the eyes.

Just like a house, under whose roof
the hostile flames are contained,
reveals the heat within through its tall windows.
