Votive antiphon for peace, said to be drawn from Sirach (Ecclesiasticus) 36:18. It is also the opening of the introit for Pentecost XVIII/OT 24 with the verse Laetatus sum.
See also Luther's German version, Verleih uns Frieden.
Musical settings at CPDL
- Juan de Arratia
- Ivo de Vento
- Melchior Franck
- Robert Führer
- Charles Gounod
- Sebastián Raval
- Ascanio Trombetti
There are also settings by Arnold von Bruck and Gesualdo. The Missa Da pacem attributed to Josquin uses the chant as a cantus firmus. Firminus Caron's contrafactum Da pacem Domine-Accoeuille m’a la belle uses a very loosely related text.
Texts and translations
Latin text
Da pacem, Domine, in diebus nostris
Quia non est alius
Qui pugnet pro nobis
Nisi tu Deus noster.
English translation
Give peace, O Lord, in our time
Because there is no one else
Who will fight for us
If not You, our God.
French translation
Donne nous la paix Seigneur en ce jour
Car il n'y a personne d'autre que Toi notre Dieu
Qui combatte pour nous
si ce n'est toi notre Dieu.
Text of the introit
Latin text
Da pacem, Domine, sustinentibus te,
ut prophetae tui fideles inveniantur:
exaudi preces servi tui, et plebis tuae Israel.
Laetatus sum in his quae dicta sunt mihi:
in domum Domini ibimus.
