Entre dos álamos verdes,
que forman juntos un arco,
por no despertar las aves
pasaba callando el Tajo.
Juntar los troncos querían
los enamorados brazos,
pero el envidioso río
no deja llegar los ramos.
Atento los mira Silvio
desde un pintado peñasco,
sombra de sus aguas dulces,
torre de sus verdes campos.
Esparcidas las ovejas
en el agua y en el prado,
unas beben y otras pacen
y otras le están escuchando.
Quejoso vive el pastor
de las envidias de Lauso,
más rico de oro que el río,
más necio en ser porfiado;
así le aparta de Elisa,
como a los olmos el Tajo,
fuerte en dividir los cuerpos,
mas no las almas de entrambos.
Tomó Silvio el instrumento,
y a las quejas de su agravio
los ruiseñores del bosque
le respondieron cantando:
"Juntaréis vuestras ramas
álamos altos,
en menguando las aguas
del claro Tajo;
pero si hay desdichas
que vencen años,
crecerán con los tiempos
penas y agravios."
