Description: Quote from MGG: "…, in recent generations, the [settings for] mixed and male choirs of Mendelssohn have captured the German singers; indeed, some of them have become almost folksongs, whose composer is hardly identified by name anymore. Among them are "Der Jäger Abschied", "O Täler weit", "Es ist bestimmt in Gottes Rat“ (originally written for v+pf), et al."
One might conclude that there is an original choral setting by Mendelssohn for "Es ist bestimmt in Gottes Rat". But no further information in the MGG on this point can be found.
There are arrangements, e.g.:

- Mutopia has a setting by Robert Radecke probably from Volksliederbuch für Männerchor (Kaiserliederbuch), erster Band, Leipzig: C. F. Peters, 1906. Liliencron comments on the song Es ist bestimmt durch Gottes Rat: „Überschrieben ist das Gedicht »Nach altdeutscher Weise«, Mendelssohns (einstimmige) Komposition »Volkslied«. In der Tat sind die Verse durch Mendelssohns Musik zu einem der verbreitetsten Lieder geworden. Feuchterslebens Text ward vom Komponisten an mehreren Stellen wesentlich geändert worden.“ (Kaiserliederbuch 1906, Bd. 1, S. 778, Anm. 107)
- Musicalion has a setting by Arnold Mendelssohn (probably from the Volksliederbuch für gemischten Chor (Kaiserliederbuch), Erster Band. Leipzig: C.F. Peters, 1915).
- IMSLP offers an Arrangement by August Linder, which consists, however, essentially only of Mendelssohn's piano accompaniment, and in the places, where the original solo voice pauses, helplessly omits the lyrics.
In the Chorbuch, from which CPDL # 46679 stems, the given author is only "Felix Mendelssohn-Bartoldy (1809-47)." It can, of course, also be an anonymous arrangement. Why should there be so many arrangements if an original setting by Mendelssohn were available? If you know more about this, feel free to revise this text.
