Original text and translations

(Protestantized version in Praetorius 1609)

(Layritz, 1844)

Want eeuwig in Gods raad,

English.png English translation

1. Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse’s lineage coming, as men of old have sung.
It came, a floweret bright,
Amid the cold of winter, when half spent was the night.

2b. Isaiah ’twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind;
With Mary we behold it, the virgin mother kind.
To show God’s love aright,
She bore to men a Savior, when half spent was the night.
by Theodore Baker, 1894

3. The shepherds heard the story proclaimed by angels bright,
How Christ, the Lord of glory was born on earth this night.
To Bethlehem they sped
And in the manger found Him, as angel heralds said.

(see German verse 3)
4. This Flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air,
Dispels with glorious splendor the darkness everywhere;
True Man, yet very God,
From sin and death He saves us, and lightens every load.
by Harried Reynolds Kraugh (1845-1925)

5. O Savior, Child of Mary, who felt our human woe,
O Savior, King of glory, who dost our weakness know;
Bring us at length we pray,
To the bright courts of Heaven, and to the endless day!

2. Hunc Isaias florem praesagiis cecinit.
Ad ejus nos amorem Nascentis allicit.
Flos virgam superat
coeli terraeque cives, flos ille recreat.

3. Est campi flis pudici, est flos convallium.
Pulcrumque potest dici in spinis lilium.
Odoris optimi;
vel soli quodvis cedit aroma nomini.

4. Hic suo flos odore fideles attrahit.
Divino mox amore attractos imbuit.
O flos o gratia:
ad te, ad te suspiro, de te me satia.

Polish.png Polish translation

by Paweł Sikora, 1912

1. Cudowna różdżka wzrosła, gałązka bardzo mdła.
Prorocka wieść doniosła, że z Izajego pnia
zakwitnął cudny kwiat
w pośrodku ostrej zimy, gdy ciemność kryła świat.

2. Ten kwiatek, co zachwyca, Izajasz wieści rad,
a Maria go, Dziewica, wydała na ten świat.
Powiła Dziecię swe,
jak zrządził Bóg przedwieczny, gdy świat spoczywał w śnie.

3. Kwiatuszek ten na ziemi przecudną szerzy woń
i promieniami swemi rozprasza nocną toń.
Prawdziwy Człowiek-Bóg
w cierpieniach dopomaga, ratuje z śmierci trwóg.

4. O Jezu, aż do zgonu, do zejścia z kraju łez
Ty moją bądź obroną. Aż łzy obetrzesz z rzęs,
gdy ujrzym Twoją twarz
w ojczyźnie pełnej chwały, o to nam Boże zdarz!

Spanish.png Spanish translation

1. Sobre la noche reina la luz de tu esplendor;

2. Nos ha nacido un niño, un Hijo se nos dio;

3. Cedieron las tinieblas, la vida renació;

Swedish.png Swedish translation

1. Det är en ros utsprungen av Davids rot och stam;

3. Den späda rosen fina, som doftar salighet,
i mörkret månde skina, besegra dunkelhet.

Ja, i din faders hus
låt oss dig evigt lova i salighet och ljus.
