Edition notes: Source - Piae Cantiones, where the refrain melody is in the Tenor (see the Lutheran hymn 'Danket dem herren'). The alto second syllable of 'virginae' is a tone lower in the source (Piae Cantiones ed. Woodward) and I suspect it was ficta practice to flatten the bass Es as in the second edition - Rostock 1625). Piae Cantiones does not provide a melody for the verses, the present one is as recorded by Steeleye Span. In the spirit of this oral tradition this well-known version has been adapted for SAATTBB

Deus homo factus est, natura mirante; mundus renovatus est a Christo regnante. Refrain. Ezechiellis porta clausa pertransitur; unde lux est orta, salus invenitur. Refrain. Ergo nostra contio psallat iam in lustro; Benedicat Domino; salus regi nostro. Refrain. German translation Translation by Martin Schubert Refrain: Freut euch, freut euch! Christus ist von der Jungfrau Maria geboren worden. Freut euch! Die Zeit der Gnade ist gekommen, was wir uns gewünscht haben; demütig wollen wir Lieder der Freude singen. Refrain. Gott ist Mensch geworden, während sich die Natur wundert; die Welt ist erneuert worden, indem Christus regiert. Refrain.
