General Information

First of the nine responsories for Matins of Maundy Thursday.

There are discrepancies between the Latin text below and the standard text of the responsory, and between the Latin text below and the translations given below. Capital letters have been used to identify the various portions of the text and illustrate the discrepancies.

Original text and translations

Latin text:

(A) In monte Oliveti ad patrem oravit: Pater si fieri potest transeat a me calix iste. Spiritus quidem promptus est caro autem infirma. (B) Fiat voluntas tua. (C) Verumtamen non sicut ego volo, sed sicut tu vis. (B) Fiat voluntas tua.

(A) Au mont des Oliviers, il pria en s´adressant á son Père:
"Père, si cela est possible, faites que ce calice s´éloigne de moi;
car si l´esprit est prompt la chair est faible;
(B) Que Votre volonté soit faite."
