The words are attributed to John Chrysostom, a fourth-century church father. John Chrysostom wrote in Greek; somewhere along the line they were translated to Church Slavonic, as used in this work.
Russian Orthodox ecclesiastical authorities strongly objected to the work's "spirit of modernism" and refused to sanction it for use during church services (Ivan Moody, cited in Wikipedia), similar to the reception of Handel's Messiah, Bach's sacred cantatas, and Ralph Carmichael.
