Description: In looking for a celebration piece to mark my fortieth birthday, and also to practice my own compositional skills, there seemed no better option than writing my own version of the Magnificat. I have dedicated the piece to my wife, Ellie, in grateful thanks for everything she has done for me in the last thirteen years.

I have chosen more modern words as I feel the world probably has enough settings to Book Of Common Prayer words! The words themselves are taken from Common Worship, and if reproducing the words for any order of service the copyright for those words, indicated in the footer of the score, must be respected. If the piece(s) is/are to be included in a commercial publication, or recorded for commercial sale further permissions must be sought, please contact the composer at the e-mail address on the composer page. More details on the copyright can be found at the link below.

Magnificat
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour;
he has looked with favour on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed;
the Almighty has done great things for me
and holy is his name.

He has mercy on those who fear him,
from generation to generation.

He has shown strength with his arm
and has scattered the proud in their conceit,

Casting down the mighty from their thrones
and lifting up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away empty.

He has come to the aid of his servant Israel,
to remember his promise of mercy,

The promise made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen

Nunc Dimittis
Now, Lord, you let your servant go in peace:
your word has been fulfilled.

My own eyes have seen the salvation
which you have prepared in the sight of every people;

A light to reveal you to the nations
and the glory of your people Israel.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen
