Biography Moritz, also called Maurice the Learned, was Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel from 1592 to 1627, a theater builder and patron of Heinrich Schütz and John Dowland as well as musician in his own right and a man of letters. A Calvinist, he endeavored to maintain an alliance with Sweden, even as his realm bore the brunt of the 30 Years War and his heavily taxed subjects secretly negotiated with Tilly.
