Italian text O Mirtillo, Mirtillo, anima mia, se vedessi qui dentro come sta il cor di questa che chiami crudelissima Amarilli, so ben che tu di lei quella pietà, che da lei chiedi, avresti. Oh anime in amor troppo infelici! che giova a te, cor mio, l'esser amato? che giova a me l'aver sì caro amante? Perchè, crudo destino, ne disunisci tu, s'Amor ne strigne? e tu, perchè ne strigni, se ne parte il destin, perfido Amore? Il pastor fido III.4, vv. 506-18

English translation O my Mirtillo! if within my Breast, Thou coudst but see, how far'd the Heart of her Who thou hast call'd most cruel Amarillis; Full well I know, the Pity thou hast ask'd, Now thou wouldst give: Ah Lovers too unhappy! To be belov'd, ah! What avails it thee? Or me, to have a Lover, so belov'd? Why, cruel Fate, dost thou the Hearts divide, Which Love has joined?
