Biography Gaius Plinius Secundus, also known as Pliny the Elder, was a commander in the army and navy of the Roman Empire, credited with writing the first Roman encyclopedia, his "Natural History" or "Naturalis Historiae." He is believed to have died attempting to rescue survivors from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius and the destruction of the city of Pompeii by boat.
