Tantum ergo

General Information

Tantum ergo comprises the last two verses of the Eucharistic hymn Pange lingua by Thomas Aquinas (13th cent.). These two verses are often sung separately from the complete hymn, and were set to music by many composers.

Praestet fides supplementum

Translations

German translation Solch großes Sakrament also wollen wir gesenkten Hauptes verehren, und das alte Bündnis soll dem neuen Ritus weichen. Möge der Glaube dort weiterhelfen, wo die Sinne versagen.

Dem Vater und dem Sohne Preis und Jubel! Heil, Ehr, Ruhm und Lobpreis sei ihnen gesagt. Dem, der aus beiden hervorgeht, sei gleiches Lob.

English translation So let us devoutly revere this great sacrament, and the old covenant may give way to the new rite. May faith grant assistance to the deficiency of our senses.

Jubilant praise, glory, laud, honor, and benediction be to the Father and the Son. Equal praise be to Him that proceeds from the two.

Second version
