Born March 1942, educated Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby and Brasenose College, Oxford (graduated BA 1964, MA 1973); PhD University of Liverpool, 1967. Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in English Literature at Universities of Leeds (1967-70) and Manchester (1970-93). Honorary Research Fellow, University of Manchester, 1993 to date.
