Dr. Hoffman received degrees in Composition from Brandeis University (Ph.D. 1993), the New England Conservatory of Music (M.M. 1984), and The Boston Conservatory (B.M. Cum Laude 1981). His teachers included Yehudi Wyner, Martin Boykan, Harold Shapero, Arthur Berger, Christopher Roze, Larry Alan Smith and Hugo Norden.

Kjos, Theodore Presser, Universal Edition and Warner Brothers), and renowned composers (including Mario Davidovsky, Andrew Imbrie, Lorin Maazel, George Perle, Gunther Schuller, Harold Shapero, Yehudi Wyner and Ellen Zwilich). In the preface to Gunther Schuller’s book The Compleat Conductor (Oxford University Press, 1997), Mr. Schuller expressed his gratitude to Dr. Hoffman for the work he and Scores International did in editing the musical examples for the book. In the Acknowledgements section of The Szymanowski Collection (Universal Edition, 1997), editor David Mattingly thanked Dr. Hoffman for having "...provided inventively elegant notational solutions." Dr. Hoffman was also the engraving editor for many well-known popular music selections including Unforgettable: The Duet, Selections from Home Alone, and Selections from Batman Returns. While Chief Editor at Scores International, a number of the publications he edited won first and second place Paul Revere Awards for graphic excellence from the Music Publishers Association.
