Voicing info on title

Hi John! I noticed you've been creating a few pages with "a 8", "a 10" etc. on the title. Do you think it's necessary? I usually only put voicing info on titles when it is necessary to distinguish two works by the same composer that have different number of voices; in all other situations I prefer the shorter, simpler title without it. But I guess there's no rule here at CPDL about it, it's a matter of taste. -- CarlosTalk 11:46, 29 June 2008 (PDT)

Hi Carlos, I'm actually not a proponent of the "a n", disignations, but merely following what Sabane had used as a title. I've omitted "a 4" because it's really not needed on a SATB work. If you do want to rename, just rename the display name, not the source name, so reloads will work. ie: Ave Maria Johnhenryfowler 12:48, 29 June 2008 (PDT)

Now I saw that Sabine used the "a n" designations inside the PDFs too, so perhaps we should leave the titles the way she conceived them. Montecassino Ms-Adoramus te Domine PDF & MIDI files

Hi John. You never got back to me about what files I was supposed to make PDFs and MIDs for, but after much searching, I finally found Montecassino Ms-Adoramus te Domine.mus which says it is a Finale 2007 file, so I've made the following files:

Adding editions which aren't available (yet)

Hi John. Great to see all these links to Art Song Central popping up. Unfortunately, on looking at one of the works page on ASC, I found that the work you indexed into CPDL isn't actually available there, though apparently it will be coming in the future. I have commented out all the edition info for ASC on the following pages:

I don't think it's a good idea to add links to sites for a resource that isn't there yet, even if it will be added soon. A user who comes to the CPDL works page from the "Most recent scores" list expecting to find a score or link to one would be disappointed. For what it's worth, the lack of links on ASC's Come raggio di sol was due to a faulty edit I made last night to remove a dead link. I have now replaced the information. The others in your list link to external sites. Two to Project Gutenberg, and two, if I recall correctly offhand to WIMA. Rather than remove those valuable resources from CPDL's links, it would be reasonable to link directly to those sites. I don't ever make song posts for material that is not immediately accessible. In any case, I thank both of you for your good work here. (And Bob, I hope I haven't caused hard feelings by my reaction to your post on IMSLP.) --David Newman talk 12:52am, 14 July 2008 (EST)

John, I wasn't disputing the fact that all of the links you added pointed to ASC pages which exist, just that there wasn't a score scanned by David Newman available on those pages. There were indeed ASC pages for the score pages that I listed above, but they simply pointed to other resources available elsewhere on the web (and still do). PS. Now that I understand your objection, I agree with you. Where the PDF file is not ASC's generated file, but rather a pointer to a different source, I will use the original source, and put the ASC pointer in the external links area of the works page. Stanford you gave me to add

Hi John. I finally got round to adding Andrew Crookall's edition of Stanford's communion service in B flat and I've just been looking at his edition of the Kyrie and Sanctus of the setting in C. However, I've been listening to a recording and the two don't match. Can you shed any light on the situation? Where did the Sibelius files come from? Hopefully, I'll be able to get my hands on published editions of all of Stanford's communion services so I can sort this out. --Bobnotts talk 18:50, 21 July 2008 (PDT)

Hi Bob, http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/images/4/4b/Stanford-Masses-From-Crookall.zip <-- I've uploaded the original zip file that was on Crookall's site before it dissappeared. This is where the Sibelius files came from. Inside the zip there are duplicate names "Kyrie in C" and "Sanctus in C" a pair from 4/7/04 and the other 1/1/2004 and 12/30/2003 respectively. There thay be confusion between the communion service and the canticles. I believe that "Stanford in C" could stand for either. Good luck on the forensics ! Johnhenryfowler 23:46, 21 July 2008 (PDT)

Deep linking

Hi John. All the new editions that you're indexing into CPDL is really improving the choice and variety of works available here, it's great to come to CPDL and see all the new links.

A few points:

  1. Deep linking to resources, such as the link you added to the PDF of Après un rêve, Op. 7, No. 1 (Gabriel Fauré) from the Mutopia Project is considered bad netiquette (net etiquette) because it uses another site's bandwidth without actually linking to one of their web pages and giving them visitors. Where the link is to a PDF/MIDI/etc on the Williams College or CPDL servers, of course it is fine to have a direct link. Even if you have permission to deep link to the Mutopia Project in this fashion, it's not useful for users who miss out on the other resources available on the MP score page including PDFs in alternative paper sizes, MIDI and source files.

  1. Secondly, please include the name of the editor of the edition in question, not "Mutopia" or "Mutopia Project". You can find the name of the editor in the bottom left hand corner of the Mutopia score page.

  1. Finally, if you're going to include the details of scores hosted externally, please make sure that they're correct. In the case of Après un rêve, Op. 7, No. 1 (Gabriel Fauré), the A4 PDF is 73 kbytes, not 200 as you suggested. There are many other cases where I have corrected the PDF file size for score entries that you added - that was just one example.

to get the PDF size and the number of pages. I plan to go back and correct this information, but you are welcome to assist me. In the case of score page count this will not be the same as "Image Count" which includes all the blank pages, so the PDF scan would have to be opened, and the pages counted... You can see my edit to Après un rêve, Op. 7, No. 1 (Gabriel Fauré) here as an example. Thanks for the quick reply. As for the individual that we call "editor" or "contributor" here on CPDL, it seems that Mutopia call them "Maintainers" though it seems clear to me (if you look at the text on the PDF) that the "Maintainer" is the typesetter and editor, so their name should be included where we have "editor". If there's no obvious contributor, then I guess it's ok to put an institution name, such as the Internet Archive. However, where you've identified a scanner or "scribe operator", they should indeed be listed (their name, not an email address).
I understand your relunctance to add the score info for externally hosted files, especially when that can so easily change with a revision, etc. When I'm tidying pages up, I don't usually include the PDF file size, so feel free to miss it out if you like. What we want to avoid is incorrect file sizes which may confuse the user.
As for the rest of the matters, I'm glad we're singing from the same hymn sheet! I've just reverted your addition to Requiem in D minor, Op. 48 (Gabriel Fauré), by the way, because it appears to duplicate the already submitted edition CPDL #12247. PDFs of Neue Liebeslieder all have misspelled titles

Hi John. Someone has pointed out that all the PDFs of your editions of the Brahms Neue Liebeslieder have misspelled titles. I checked, and indeed you have misspelled Liebeslieder as Liebesleider on all of them. You might want to change your Sibelius files and make new PDFs. -- Chucktalk Giffen 07:22, 30 August 2008 (PDT)

time to tackle this project. Due to inconsitancies in the names of the PDF, Midi and source files this took about 4 hours to accomplish ! Copyrighted translation

Hi John. Just to let you know that I removed a translation that you added to Jerusalem (Charles Hubert Hastings Parry). It was marked as being "copyright © 2003 by Amitha Iriarte". As you know, all content added to CPDL must be licensed under the CPDL license and this seemed not to be the case in this instance. If the translator was contacted and agreed to release their work under the CPDL license, I would be delighted to see the translation reappear. --Bobnotts talk 20:13, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

This translation is from "The Lied and Art Song Page", http://www.recmusic.org/lieder/ and I have permission from the author to use the (Spanish) translation. Whenever I use translations from this site I give credit to the author, but if you prefer we can just have a pointer to "The Lied and Art Song Page" so no credit would need to be recorded at CPDL.
