'''1.''' Rest awhile, you cruel cares,
Be not more severe than love.
Beauty kills and beauty spares,
And sweet smiles sad sighs remove.
Laura, fair queen of my delight,
Come grant me love in love's despite,
And if I ever fail to honour thee,
:''Let this heav'nly light I see
:''Be as dark as hell to me.

'''2.''' If I speak, my words want weight,
Am I mute, my heart doth break,
If I sigh, she fears deceit,
Sorrow then for me must speak.
Cruel unkind, with favour view
The wound that first was made by you,
And if my torments feigned be,
:''Let this heav'nly light I see
:''Be as dark as hell to me.

'''3.''' Never hour of pleasing rest
Shall revive my dying ghost,
Till my soul hath repossessed
The sweet hope which love hath lost.
Laura, redeem the soul that dies
By fury of thy murd'ring eyes,
And if it proves unkind to thee,
:''Niech światłość, którą dla mnie jesteś, o pani,
:''Ciemnością się stanie piekielnych otchłani.

'''2.''' Znaczenia żądne są moje słowa,
Serce zaś pęka, gdy milczeć muszę.
Fałszu się lęka, gdy mówię - "Kocham",
Może więc niemym cierpieniem ją wzruszę.
Pychy twojej zatruta strzała,
Sercu mojemu tę ranę zadała.
A jeśli w torturze mej jest udawanie,
:''Niech światłość, którą dla mnie jesteś, o pani,
:''Ciemnością się stanie piekielnych otchłani.

'''3.''' Cichego spoczynku krótka chwila
Nie wskrzesi już gasnącego ducha,
Chyba że wróci nadzieja miła
I żalów moich raz jeszcze wysłucha.
Lauro! Zbaw moją mrącą duszę,
Spojrzeniem, które śmiertelne zadaje katusze.
A jeśli niemiłą będzie, w twym mniemaniu,
:''Niech światłość, którą dla mnie jesteś, o pani,
:''Ciemnością się stanie piekielnych otchłani.
Phillis is my only joy,
Faithless as the winds and seas;
Sometimes forward, sometimes coy,
Yet she never fails to please.
If with a frown I am cast down,
Phillis smiling and beguiling,
Makes me happier than before.
Though alas! too late I find
Nothing can her fancy fix,
<poem>O sweet woods the delight of solitarinesse,
O how much do I love your solitarinesse.

From fames desire, from loves delight retir'd,
In these sad groves an Hermits life I led,
And those flase pleasures which once I admir'd,
With sad remembrance of my fall, I dread.
To birds to trees, to earth, impart I this,
For shee less secret, and as senceless is.
O sweet woods, etc.
O how much, etc.

Experience which repentance only brings,
Doth bid mee now my hart from love estrange,
Love is disdained when it doth looke at Kings,
And love loe placed, base and apt to change:
The power doth take from him his liberty,
His want of worth makes him in cradell die.
O sweet woods, etc.
O how much, etc.

You men that give false worship unto Love,
And seke that which you never shall obtaine,
The endlesse worke of Sisisphus you procure,
Whose end is this, to know you strive in vaine,
Hope and desire which now your Idols bee,
You needs must loose and feele dispaire with mee.
O sweet woods, etc.
O how much, etc.

You woods in you the fairest Nimphs have walked,
Nimphs at whose sight all harts did yeeld to Love.
You woods in whom deere lovers oft have talked,
How doe you now a place of mourning prove,
Wansted my Mistres saith this is the doome,
Thou art loves Childbed, Nursery, and Tombe.
O sweet woods, etc.
O how much, etc.</poem>
Más vale trocar
plazer por dolores
que estar sin amores.

Donde es gradecido
es dulce el morir;
bivir en olvido,
aquel no es vivir;
mejor es sufrir
passión y dolores
que estar sin amores

Es vida perdida
bivir sin amar
y mas es que vida
saberla emplear;
mejor es penar
sufriendo dolores
que estar sin amores.

La muerte es vitoria
do bive aficion
que espera aver gloria
quien sufre passion;
mas vale presion
de tales dolores
que estar sin amores.

El ques mas penado
mas goza de amor
quel mucho cuydado
le quita el temor:
asís ques mejor
amar con dolores
que estar sin amores.

No teme tormento
quien ama con fe,
si su pensamiento
sin causa no fue;
aviendo por que
mas valen dolores
que estar sin amores.

Amor que no pena
no pida placer
pues ya le condena
su poco querer;
mejor es perder
plazer por dolores
que estar sin amores.

</poem>

{{Translation|English}}
<poem>
It is better to exchange
pleasure for pain
than to live without love.

If you are thankful
it is sweet to die,
to live in oblivion
is not to live at all
It is better to endure
passion and pain
than to live without love.

It is a wasted life
to live without love
it is a better living
to know how to use it
It is better to grieve
suffering pain
than to live without love.

Death is victory
where affliction lives
hoping for glory
whoever suffers passion.
It is better to have the pressure
of those pains
than to live without love.

Whoever grieves the most
enjoys love the most
since much care
takes fear away;
So it is better
to love in pain
than to live without love

No one fears torment
loving with faith
if his thinking
had no cause;
having a reason why
it is better to suffer pain
than to live without love.

Love that has no pain
should not claim for pleasure
Since it is condemned
by its little loving
It is better to lose
pleasure for pain
than to live without love.
The story is clearly an issue of cuckoldry and can be more or less made sense, though it is not clear what "fata la parte" means exactly.
Deh!

Faccia contente homai
Che s’egli avien che dia fine à miei guai
Nel Tempio tuo spargerò fiori e foglie.

Dunque ogni acerba noia
Scaccia ti prego, amore,
Che s’opri la tua forza e’l tuo valore
Farà saper che sei nunzio di gioia.
<poem>
God of love, pray beg Fate
to hear the ardent prayers:
say that if he does what I ask
I shall make garlands to your beloved name.

Tell him that he should grant my wishes now
and put an end to my woes,
I shall scatter flowers and leaves in your temple.

Please, God of love, then
let him dispel all bitter troubles,
let your strength and vigour prevail
and I shall let it be known that you are a messenger of joy.

'''Description:''' The original text is sung by a German soldier who can speak very little Italian. This fact is given very well in the lyrics, which resemble exactly a strong German accent (even in modern Italian) and include some French words which the soldier seems to mistake for Italian – ''bon, compagnon'' – and ''‘follere’,'' which means nothing in Italian but closely resembles the vulgar verb ''fottere''. It also may be from Late Latin, the present active infinitive of ''folleo'', to ''puff out'' like a bellows (suggesting the soldier wants to sing a song of bragging or puffery). (Dictionary reference here: http://www.wordsense.eu/folleo/#Latin) The text has many double meanings, extremely difficult to transpose into other languages. The skill of the author exploits the limited language of the soldier, using simple expressions that help him to achieve an extremely funny monologue. The strong language has led to ‘adjusted’ versions that have replacements for the most offensive words, ''ficcar'' (baciar) and ''urtar'' (ballar).
<poem>
Datemi pace, o duri miei pensieri:
Non basta ben ch’Amor fortuna e morte
Senza trovarmi dentro altri guerrieri?
E tu, mio cor, anchor se’ pur qual eri?
Disleal a me sol che fiere scorte
Vai ricettando e sei fatto consorte
De’ miei nemici si pronti e leggieri
In te i secreti suoi messaggi Amore
In te i vaghi pensier s’arman d’errore:
Perche d’ogni mio mal te solo incolpo.
<poem>
Damon e Filli insieme

Ch’avean salde e pungenti ;
Eran sospiri i colpi e i cari baci
Erano le ferite accorte e audaci.

Ma si cangiò la sorte:
Cha dà colpo mortal sentendo morte
Filli nel petto cede e s’abbandona
Dicendo: Amico, io ti perdon, perdona

Non fia mal che tu pera
All’hor disse Damon, dolce guerriera;
Ch’a guerregiar spesso gl’amanti invita.
<poem>
Damon and Phyllis were locked in combat,
holding nothing back.
Their weapons were equal, as were the blows and wounds exchanged,
and the god of love was there to witness such a great struggle.

Potent glances were their weapons,
sturdy and piercing,
sighs were their blows, and tender kisses
were the wounds they boldly inflicted.

But fate changed,
which deals mortal blows; Phyllis, feeling death
in her breast, yielded and gave herself up,
Saying, 'Friend, I forgive you; pray forgive me.

May you never perish.'
Then Damon replied: 'Sweet warrior,
what you take to be death is really sweet life,
which often moves lovers to engage in combat.'
'''1.''' Can she excuse my wrongs with virtue’s cloak?
shall I call her good when she proves unkind?
Are those clear fires which vanish into smoke?
must I praise the leaves where no fruit I find?

No, no: where shadows do for bodies stand,
thou may’st be abused if thy sight be dim.
Cold love is like to words written on sand,
or to bubbles which on the water swim.

Wilt thou be thus abused still,
seeing that she will right thee never?
if thou canst not overcome her will,
thy love will be thus fruitless ever.

'''2.''' Was I so base, that I might not aspire
Unto those high joys which she holds from me?
As they are high, so high is my desire:
If she this deny what can granted be?

If she will yield to that which reason is,
It is reasons will that love should be just.
Dear make me happy still by granting this,
Or cut off delays if that I die must.

Better a thousand times to die,
then for to live thus still tormented:
Dear but remember it was I
Who for thy sake did die contented.

- Toż on miłości pragnie sprawiedliwej!

Ch'Amor tacitamente

Tesse fra fiori e l'herbe un placido angue.

Beautiful shows here the sky, vague and clear,

Here smile the roses, and the happy flowers,

Blowing loving smells

Wake the birds to a sweet pleasant singing.

But in the end bad luck arises,

Because Love, silently,

Waves with flowers and herbs a quiet snake.

To the breasts of whom comes he offers it gently

And the heart, sweetly,

Languishes, and dies filled with sweet desires.

''Note: it is particularly difficult to translate the manyfold meanings of Renaissance languages (Italian, in this case). Many of the repetitions that appear in the English translation are not present in the Italian original, which allows many more "nuances" to the various love expressions.''
All’ arm’ all’ arm’ o fidi miei pensieri

Rendetevi gridando a buona guerra.
Beato mi direi,
se mi mostrasse vostr'alma mercede
Quel di che fan vostre parole fede.
Ma son homai si stanco
De l'aspettar cio che'l mio cor desia,
Ch'io potrei venir manco,
In van bramando vostra cortesia.
<poem>
Blessed could I call myself
If your soul would show pity to me
On that day when your words will be trustful.
But I am so tired by now
Of waiting for what my heart wishes,
That I could abandon all,
Searching your courtesy in vain.
Therefore, my hope,
Before I reach the end of the bitter years,
Comfort my sad spirit.
