Page deletion

  • Delete: agree with Vaarky's arguments. —Carlos Email.gif 21:17, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Keep based on new info: see below. -- Vaarky 03:51, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Delete Well done for tracking down the MIDI file, Vaarky, but I'm afraid I must disagree with your current assessment. If there is only a MIDI file available, we cannot truly call this an edition of the work in question. One of the minimum requirements for score submission to CPDL is that there is an "image" file, be it a PDF, GIF or a source file which may be read by a freely available reader (eg. Finale Reader). A MIDI file in itself is not enough to constitute an edition. --Bobnotts talk 13:32, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Update: no objection to deletion: I thought a PDF could be generated from a MIDI. No objection to deleting. -- Vaarky 16:33, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Vaarky, just to clarify this point: you thought right, most music editing softwares can import a midi file and create a draft score from it. The visual result will be better or worse, depending on how the midi was created. But then, the person editing it will still need to correct many details and add titles/names/lyrics to the score. Such edition could then be uploaded to CPDL, but then it would be just fair if the credits went to the person who made all this instead of to Piet Mennen. —Carlos Email.gif 20:38, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Found corrected URL for broken midi link

It looks like Piet Mennen who ran www.choirmidi.nl/musicrb.html, died in Feb 2006, and his files have been moved to the following URL: http://www.couleurvocale.nl/midi.htm

Rough English translation I got by using automated tools:

Our bass Piet Mennen, who died in February 2006, had a large collection of midi files that can serve as study aids for choral singers. To preserve his collection, we included in our site, partly as a tribute to Piet.

I am therefore correcting the link on this score page, since Piet gave permission to use the midi. I now think we should keep the page. -- Vaarky 03:39, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks Vaarky for the info. We should now consider the usefulness of the midi file per se. Piet may well have used a tool like Encore to create this midi, but unfortunatelly we don't have the source file, so we can't create a useful PDF from it. Because of this, I still maintain that the page should be deleted, as it doesn't hold a valid edition in my point of view. Another point is that there are many sites out there that host classical midi files, hundreds of files each. If CPDL starts accepting midis as editions, all these sites would in theory be allowed to index their midi collections at CPDL; add to this that the authorship of midi files is practically impossible to identify, complicating even more things with respect to copyright. Just food for thought. —Carlos Email.gif 04:39, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Yes, Carlos, we have only 20 pages with MIDI without PDF (against 1.500 PDF without MIDI). All of them are GIF+MIDI or NET+MIDI pages. I'm able to create MIDI from PDF but not the contrary, too many informations would be lost in this case. Claude 10:06, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
