Original text and translations

Italian.png Italian text

Augellin che la voce al canto spieghi,
per pietà del mio duolo
deh spargi l’ali a volo:
indi vanne a Madonna, anzi al mio sole,
e con dogliosi accenti
dille queste parole:
«O soave cagion d’aspri tormenti,
soffrirete voi sempre
che in pianto chi v’adora si distempre?»

English.png English translation

Little bird, who unfurls song with your voice,
in pity of my sorrow,
ah, spread your wings in flight:
Come to my Lady, to my sun,
and with sad inflection,
tell her these words:
‘Oh sweet cause of bitter torments,
will you grief forever while
he who loves you in tears dissolves?’

Ptáčku, který si hlásek ke zpěvu chystáš,
Pro smilování nad mou bolestí
roztáhni křídla k letu.
A pospěš za Madonnou, či spíše mým sluncem,
A se sladkým trylkem
jí vyzpívej tahle slova:
Ó něžná příčino krutých trápení,
Kéž byste také zakusila,
Jak v pláči tone ten, který vás miluje.
