Description: The motet is based on one of the Dreizehn Psalmen zu singen in den vier hernach notierten Tönen, a collection by Hans Sachs, (Nürnberg, 1526). Franck however does not use either one of these four tunes, but uses a tune from Geystliche Gesangk Buchleyn (Wittenberg, 1524), by Martin Luther and Johann Walter. This tune, originaly for Mensch wiltu leben seliglich, is possibly one of the tunes composed by Martin Luther himself.
