General Information

Title: Hortus conclusus
Composer: Rodrigo de Ceballos
Lyricist:

Number of voices: 4vv   Voicings: SATB or SATT
Genre: SacredMotet 'in festo BMV'

Language: Latin
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 1852 in Lira sacro-hispana (ed. Hilarión Eslava), Volume 1, no. 16
Description: A 4 part motet found in Eslava's "Liro Sacro-Hispana". Eslava often "improved" on his sources. This may be an example. He attributes the work to Francisco Ceballos, but Grove attributes it to Rodrigo. Eslava may also have made a mistake in the initial description of the sequence of voices.

Latin.png Latin text

Hortus conclusus soror mea,
sponsa mea, et fons signatus.
Aperi mihi, O soror mea, amica mea,
columba mea, immaculata mea.
Surge propera amica mea et veni.
Veni speciosa mea, ostende mihi, faciem tua.
Favus distillans labia tus,
mel et lac sub lingua tua.
Veni, sponsa mea, veni coronaberis.

English.png English translation

A garden enclosed is my sister,
my bride, and a sealed fountain.
Open to me, my sister, my love,
my dove, my undefiled.
Arise my love and come.
Come my fair one, let me see your face.
Your lips distil nectar,
honey and milk are under your tongue.
Come my bride, and you shall be crowned.

Spanish.png Spanish translation

(Ct 5, 2; 2, 10,14; 4, 11)
Huerto cerrado eres, hermana mía, esposa mía,
huerto cerrado y fuente sellada.
¡Ábreme, Oh hermana mía, amiga mía,
paloma mía, inmaculada mía!
¡Levántate, levántate, no tardes,
amiga mía, y ven!
¡Ven, ven preciosa mía,
muéstrame tu rostro!
Tus labios destilan miel;
hay miel y leche en tu lengua.
¡Ven esposa mía, ven, serás coronada!
