On 12 May 1767 Wainwright was appointed organist at the Collegiate Church of Manchester (now Manchester CathedralLink to the English Wikipedia article). He was buried at St. Mary's, Stockport on 28 January 1768, and was succeeded as organist of Manchester by his son Robert.
