Grechesche text

Madonna hormai mil vedo
Chie tipota'l mio piando,
Gne la pregarve tando,
Nol move chel to cori del diamande;
Mi chie xe bun amande fidel
Morir mel vedi sul to fazza
E cumpassium alguna de mi

O mia cacchi forduna,
Tigra vu xè pur certo,
Ah' dura sorte,
Ch'aidarm' aldri no pol chi vu'o la morte.

Grechesche was the language of Balkan mercenaries, chiefly Albanian and Greek, living in Venice: a patois of Veneziano with Greek expressions. Cipriano de Rore's madrigal on this text was the first in a collection of 39 assembled by Antonio Molina under his pseudonym Manoli Blessi.

English.png English text

Lady, now I see
That my tears are nothing,
Just like my prayers,
And don't move your heart of diamond;
You ask that a good true lover
Die for a look at your face
And any kindness of mine
Has every cruelty [in return].
Oh my ill fortune,
You want to be a tiger [a cruel beast].
Ah, hard fate,
That others cannot help me who want to die.
