Text and translations

The french text here formerly showed the line: "Ma bouche qui savait [voulait] sourire". But all editions in cpdl have "vous souloit (=soulait in modern french) rire". Moreover, the 1533 and 1544 editions of Marot also have "souloit". The verb "souloir" now is regarded obsolete, but is still to be found in 19th century dictionaries, meaning "to use to". Some translations here may be based on that different text, as certainly is the Italian one, where the equivalent verb form would be "soleva".

Original text
Mon cœur se recommande à vous,
Tout plein d'ennui et de martyre;
Au moins en dépit des jaloux
Faites qu'adieu vous puisse dire!
Ma bouche qui vous soulait rire
Et conter propos gracieux
Ne fait maintenant que maudire
Ceux qui m'ont banni de vos yeux.

Sacred contrafact (by Simon Goulart, 1576)
Mon coeur se rend à toi, Seigneur,
Tout plein d'ennui et de martyre,
Helas! car j'ai de ta saveur
Trop abusé, dont je souspire.
Ma bouche n'oseroit plus rire,
Ni comter propos gracieux:
Ouvre la donc, et lui fai dire,
Ton los en chant melodieux.

English.png English translation

My heart is offered still to you
Full now of woe and deep despairing!
Be not to constancy untrue;
Say one farewell, my sorrow sharing!
My mouth which once could smile in gladness,
And charming stories improvise
Now can only curse in its madness
Those who banished me from your eyes.

Alternative version I
My heart doth beg you'll not forget
My heavy heart, with sorrow aching
And spite of jealous eyes e'en yet,
One last farewell we might be taking!
Once, smiles my lips were ever curving
And gracious words were all they knew.
Now alone for cursing they're serving
Those who banish me, love, from you.

Alternative version II
My heart to you I do commend,
Though it o’erruns with pain and woe;
To spite those who my fall attend
Bid me farewell before you go!
My mouth that once a smile did know
And spoke naught but sweet words of grace
Can only now vile curses throw
At those who caused me my disgrace.

Il mio cuore si raccomanda a voi
colmo di malinconia e di cruccio:
almeno a dispetto dei gelosi,
fate che vi possa dire addio!
La mia bocca, che sapeva sorridere
e raccontare cose graziose,

Spanish.png Spanish translation

Mi corazón se encomienda a usted,
todo lleno de problemas y de martirio;
A pesar de las personas envidiosas
haced que se lo pueda decir a Dios.
Mi boca, que quería sonreir
y contar relatos graciosos,
ahora no hace más que maldecir
a los que me han desterrado de tus ojos.

Czech.png Czech translation

Mé srdce, plné žalu a bolesti,
Vás žádá o pomoc.
Dovolte, aby žárlivcům navzdory
Vám mohlo sbohem dát.
Má ústa, jež uměla se smát
a pronášet slova laskavá,
teď jen zlořečí těm,
kteří mě vaším očím zapověděli.

German.png German translation

Mein Herz bittet Euch,
voller Kummer und Qual:
wenigstens, zum Trotz der Eifersüchtigen,
lasst mich euch Lebewohl sagen:
Mein Mund, der Euch anzulachen pflegte
und anmutige Worte zu sprechen,
verflucht nun nur noch
diejenigen, die mich aus Euren Augen verbannt haben.
