General Information
Title: Occhi sereni
Composer: Bernardino Mosto
Lyricist:
Number of voices: 5vv Voicing: SATTB
Genre: Secular, Madrigal
Language: Italian
Instruments: A cappella
First published: 1588 in Madrigali di Bernardino Mosto a cinque voci, no. 9
Description: The original sixth line of the lyrics is: "Ch'adornat' à RICH MOEN il vis' el petto." This does not make sense to me. There are (at least) two other settings of the same or a similar text: Andrea Gabrieli's, line is :"Quat’ ornat’ al mio som e’l vos’ e’l petto!" The other is Alessandro Orologio's setting, which is almost identical to the Mosto setting, and where the sixth line is :"Quant'ornate ad Olimpia'l vis' e'l petto". I did replace the enigmatic "RICH MOEN" by Olimpia, which at least makes some sense.

Italian text
Occhi sereni, Angeliche parole,
Riso pien di dolcezza,
Real sembiante, natural bellezza,
gratia scesa dal ciel raro intelletto,
Cor non finto pensier, alti et honesti
Ch'adornat' à Olimpia il vis' e'l petto,
O quanto sete presti,
A dar mille martiri,
E trar dell' alm' altrui mille sospiri.
