Error list

Please note: some (or most?) errors may not be actual mistakes, but just differences between different editions. The reference edition used for comparison is Baerenreiter BA5193a, 2nd printing 2006. The choir training/rehearsal aids available on the Choralia web site have been corrected in compliance with this error list.

  • Comments in italics added by Dave Fraser. I've checked Max's errors against the Bach Gesellschaft Ausgabe and find myself in disagreement with some of his suggestions. References to the Bach Gesellschaft Ausgabe appear below as BGA.

2. Es ist nun nichts

The MIDI file does not contain any time signature. MIDI file format specifications require to assume a 4/4 time signature when no time signature is present in the file, however this would induce an error as the correct time signature is 3/2. The .pdf file correctly shows a 3/2 time signature. Soprano II, measure 77, beat 1: note C should be D.

  • BGA has B. D is possible, but would make a rather awkward drop of a diminished octave to the following note

Alto, measure 72, beat 2-3: two A notes (1/4 + 1/8) should be a single note (3/8 – a tie was omitted).

  • Agree - as in BGA

3. Unter deinem Schirmen

Soprano I, measure 8 (or 14, taking the repeat into account), beat 2: note A (1/8 – 2nd in the measure) should be G.

  • BGA has G, but I can't believe this is correct, as it would create consecutive seconds with Sop II. Also, the tune simply doesn't go like that

Soprano II, measure 7 (or 13, taking the repeat into account), beat 2: note G (2nd in the measure) should be A.

  • as in BGA

Bass, measure 6 and 12 (repeat): E should be one octave lower (E2 rather than E3). This may be debatable as the keyboard accompaniment in the reference edition plays E3 and not E2.

  • BGA has E3. Indeed, there is no E2 anywhere in the piece

6. Ihr aber seid nicht fleischlich

Alto, measure 40, beat 3: note B (1/8 – 3rd in the measure) should be E (same as the fourth note)

  • as in BGA

Alto, measure 42, beat 2: note C# (1/8 – 2nd in the measure) should be D#.

  • I don't believe there can possibly be a D# against the Sop II's E in what is basically an F# major chord

Tenor, measure 24, beat 2: note B (last in the measure) should be 1/8 rather than 1/4.

  • as in BGA

Tenor, measure 40, beat 3: note E (1/8 – 3rd in the measure) should be B (same as the second note).

  • as in BGA

8. So aber Christus in euch ist

Alto, measure 7, beat 1-4: in the MIDI file the tie between the two first notes of the measure is omitted, so two separate notes are played instead of one. Tie is present on .nwc and .pdf files.

  • tied in BGA

Alto, measure 12, beat 6: note A (11th in the measure) should be Bb.

  • as in BGA

Alto, measure 18, beat 12: note A (last in the measure) should be Bb.

  • as in BGA

Tenor, measure 11, beat 6: note A (11th in the measure) should be Bb.

  • as in BGA

Bass, measure 12, beat 6: note A (6th in the measure) should be Bb.

  • as in BGA

9. Gute Nacht, o Wesen

Soprano I, measure 37, beat 2: note C (last in the measure) should be D.

  • not according to BGA. Wherever this phrase occurs, the two notes are always the same

10. So nun der Geist

Bass, measure 16, beat 2-3: option is given to sing F(#)3 for 2/2 (throughout beats 2 and 3 – i.e., one single note at the higher octave) or, alternatively, F(#)3 for 1/2 at beat 2 and F(#)2 for 1/2 at the beat 3 (i.e., first at the higher octave and second note at the lower octave).

  • not in BGA
