The Wesleyan Melodist (Thomas Jarman)
General information
Publication
Thomas Jarman's The Wesleyan Melodist was published in London by J. Hart of 109 Hatton Garden and J. Mason of 14 City Road and 66 Paternoster Row. The work's title page gives its price as 'five shillings and sixpence, cloth, or in six numbers, one shilling each', and some pages include part numbers in the margins. The catalogue of the British Library dates the work to c1840.
Publication date and place: 1840 by J. Hart and J. Mason in London.
Description of contents
The collection consists of 120 hymn tunes, usually with a single verse of text underlaid: in the majority of cases, the texts are taken from the Collection of Hymns for the Use of the People Called Methodists (the title page describes the tunes as 'particularly adapted to the various metres in the Wesleyan hymn book'). All but five of the tunes are unattributed, and apparently composed by Jarman: of the other five, three are attributed to 'C. Rider Esqe' and two to 'S. Wakely. Author of Reuben' (i.e. Samuel Wakely).
The music is in four parts, labelled Tenor - Alto - Treble - Bass in the first piece in the book: both the Tenor and Alto parts are printed in the treble clef an octave above sounding pitch, while the Treble and Bass parts are bracketed together, with additional inner harmonies provided for keyboard accompaniment. The title page refers to this as 'an arrangement for the organ, &c.'
