WORDS FOR THE ABANDONED (excerpts)

If you were important, you would be somewhere
else. All the important people have flown away.

If you were blessed as they, you, too
would vanish.

If you can hear me now, you've been appointed
no one to worry about—hiding in a cellar,

coughing in a clinic, crouching in what, yesterday,
could have been a laboratory, could have been a school.

Choices were made. You weren't counted.

JOSEPH GASTIGER
