A Sixth Set of Psalm Tunes (Thomas Clark)
General information
Publication
Thomas Clark's A Sixth Set of Psalm Tunes, A Morning and Evening Hymn, and an Anthem, with Symphonies and an Instrumental Bass, Also Two Chants, Two Responses and Sanctus was published in London, by Button, Whitaker & Beadnell of 75, St Paul's Church Yard. The dates of operation of the publishers at this address were c1814-19. It would appear that the collection was published towards the beginning of this period, as an advertisement placed by Button, Whitaker and Beadnell in Trewman's Exeter Flying Post or Plymouth and Cornish Advertiser, issue 2554 on 18 August 1814 advertised Clark's first five sets of psalm tunes with symphonies and an instrumental bass, and noted that 'A Sixth Set will be published in a few weeks'.
Publication date and place: 1814 by Button, Whitaker, and Beadnell in London.
Description of contents
The collection consists of 17 metrical psalm tunes (setting 6 texts from the 'Old Version' of Sternhold & Hopkins, 5 from the 'New Version' of Tate & Brady, 5 by Isaac Watts, and 1 by James Merrick), strophic settings of morning and evening hymns, an anthem, two chants (one single and one double), and settings of the two responses to the Ten Commandments and of the Sanctus (both texts from the Book of Common Prayer Communion service).
The music is laid out in full score with the soprano air next to the bass. The treble clef is used for soprano, alto, and tenor parts, with both the alto and tenor parts being notated an octave above sounding pitch.
A figured instrumental bass is given throughout, with 'symphonies' (short instrumental introductions and interludes) scored for three instruments (the figured bassline plus two instruments of treble pitch). Where these symphonies occur on the same systems as the vocal parts, the first treble instrument part is generally printed on the soprano part, and the second treble instrument on the tenor part.
