1. A silence which was broken,
by John's astounding word
returned again to muffle
all passion where it stirred.

2. A people lately singing
now strained their hearts to hear
the sweet receding music,
"the realm of God is near."

3. But hope, hushed and imprisoned,
will not be silent long --
another seized the promise
and sang it, sure and strong.

4. And many joined the singing.
and many came to hear,
and many soon discovered
the realm of God is near.
