Category talk:Text pages
why do some text titles appear in subcategories?
| Help |
It's not obvious to me why a few of the text titles appear in subcategories, while the rest are simply alphabetized. Can someone identify why for me? Would be good to state explicitly what the guideline is for others as well. |

Hi Vaarky, you'll find the explanation for this here. Regards |

Tx! So does that mean that almost all the ones that aren't directly visible on this page need to have the style of Category changed? Is this a volunteer project? |

I'm not sure I understood what you said with "directly visible"... all text pages/categories are already visible on this page. What we're doing is convert the old "text pages" into "text categories" one by one (this is a volunteer project! :) After this is done, all the text pages below will have moved to the sub-categories list above, with the exception of the Psalm pages, that won't be modified. The old text page will become a redirect to the new text category, and the score pages listed in the text page will have to receive the template {{LnkTxt|text category|composer surname}} in them in order to link to the appropriate text category. It sounds confusing, I won't blame you if you don't understand this! lol |

I was unclear, sorry, and am indeed unsure. Am I correct that the 14 that appear under the SubCategories heading on the Category:Text_pages page (where it says "There are 14 subcategories to this category") are the ones that don't need to be changed, and that these 14 were listed automatically when the underlying text pages were previously changed from LinkText to LnkText? And that it's all the ones appearing under the heading Pages in category "Text pages" that need to be converted from LinkText to LnkTxt? |

No, it's not so simple, all these pages/categories were created manually, they don't appear because of LinkText or LnkTxt. Humm, let me try to explain it with examples: Once upon a time... there was this idea to gather text/translations that repeated a lot (as say, "Ave Maria") in just one place. The first solution found was to create a page as Ave Maria with all text/translations inside, and then make all "Ave Maria" score pages link to it with a text like "Text and translations can be found at [[Ave Maria]]." Then they decided that the new Ave Maria page should also link back to the score pages, and so the section "Musical settings at CPDL" was created with this cross-linking. The next step was to simplify things at the score page side by creating a template that would show a standard text and also link to the text page. That's when {{LinkText|Ave Maria}} was created. It was all fine while CPDL was small and it had few independent text pages. But CPDL grew a lot, and each day new "Ave Marias" are added to it, so each time one such title is added, someone has to add {{LinkText|AveMaria}} to the new page AND also edit Ave Maria in order to link back to the new page. The idea behind the new categories was to simplify things, because when someone uses {{LnkTxt|Ave Maria|composer surname}} instead of {{LinkText|Ave Maria}}, they won't need to edit Ave Maria anymore, because the new score will appear automatically in the new Category:Ave Maria. Got the idea? Now, the conversion is not so straight forward. One can't simply "move" page "Ave Maria" to "Category:Ave Maria" (the wiki software won't let such move). So we have to create a page named "Category:Ave Maria", copy all contents of "Ave Maria" to it and make "Ave Maria" redirect to the new category. Now that this first phase is done, it's time to fix things at the score pages: we will edit one by one changing from LinkText to LnkTxt (not forgetting to add the composer surname as a sort key for the category). After we've edited all score pages, we can erase the "Musical settings at CPDL" section from "Category:Ave Maria". That's it! It's a lot of work and the advantages are only perceptible in the long term. |
