General information

This is an hymn by Joseph Hart, 1759, entitled Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ. Amended many times by many authors. In many modern hymnals, the first four lines are set to William Walker's Restoration, with an added four-line refrain, I will (a)rise and go to Jesus, by an unknown author. All six lines of Hart's hymn were set to B. F. White's Beach Spring in 1844 (Sacred Harp No. 81).

Joseph Hart, 1759

1. Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched,
Weak and wounded, sick and sore!
Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity joined with power.
He is able, He is able, He is able,
He is willing, doubt no more!

2. Ho! ye needy, come and welcome,
God's free bounty glorify.
True belief, and true repentance,
Every grace that brings us nigh.
Without money, Without money, Without money,
Come to Jesus Christ and buy.

3. Let not conscience let you linger,
Nor of fitness fondly dream;
All the fitness He requireth
Is to feel your need of Him.
This He gives you, This He gives you, This He gives you:
'Tis the Spirit's rising beam.

4. Come ye weary, heavy laden,
Bruised and mangled by the fall;
If you tarry till you're better,
You will never come at all.
Not the righteous, Not the righteous, Not the righteous;
Sinners Jesus came to call.

5. View Him groveling in the garden,
Lo! your Maker prostrate lies!
On the bloody tree behold Him:
Hear Him cry, before He dies:
“It is finished!” “It is finished!” “It is finished!”
Sinner, will this not suffice?

6. Lo! The incarnate God ascended,
Pleads the merit of His blood;
Venture on Him, venture wholly;
Let no other trust intrude.
None but Jesus, None but Jesus, None but Jesus
Can do helpless sinners good.

7. Saints and angels, joined in concert,
Sing the praises of the Lamb;
While the blissful seats of heaven
Sweetly echo with His name.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Sinners here may sing the same.

Richard De Courcy, 1775

1. Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched,
Weak and wounded, sick and sore,
Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity joined with power,
He is able, He is able, He is able;
He is willing: doubt no more.

2. Ho! ye needy; come, and welcome;
God's free bounty glorify.
True belief, and true repentance,
Every grace that brings us nigh,
Without money, without money, without money,
Come to Jesus Christ, and buy.

3. Let not conscience make you linger:
Nor of fitness fondly dream;
All the fitness he requireth
Is to feel your need of him:
This he gives you, this he gives you, this he gives you;
'Tis the Spirit's rising beam.

4. Come ye weary, heavy laden,
Bruised and mangled by the fall;
If you tarry till you're better,
You will never come at all.
Not the righteous, not the righteous, not the righteous;
Sinners Jesus came to call.

5. Agonizing in the garden,
Lo; your Maker prostrate lies;
On the bloody tree behold him,
Hear him cry before he dies,
It is finished; It is finished; It is finished!
Sinners, will not this suffice?

6. Lo! the incarnate God, ascended,
Pleads the merit of his blood!
Venture on him, venture wholly;
Let no other trust intrude.
None but Jesus, none but Jesus, none but Jesus,
Can do helpless sinners good.

7. Saints and angels joined in concert,
Sing the praises of the Lamb;
While the blissful seats of heaven
Sweetly echo with his name.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Sinners here may sing the same.

Augustus Toplady, 1776

1. Come, ye sinners, poor and wretched.
Weak and wounded, sick and sore;
Jesus ready stands to save you,
Full of pity join'd with power:
He is able,
He is willing. Doubt no more!

2. Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome;
God's free bounty glorify:
True belief, and true repentance,
Every grace that brings us nigh –
Without money,
Come to Jesus Christ, and buy.

3. Let not conscience make you linger,
Nor of fitness fondly dream;
All the fitness he requireth,
Is to feel your need of him:
This he gives you;
'Tis his Spirit's rising beam.

4. Come, ye weary, heavy laden,
Lost and ruined by the fall!
If you tarry till you're better,
You will never come at all;
Not the righteous,
Sinners Jesus came to call.

5. View him prostrate in the garden ;
On the ground your Maker lies!
On the bloody tree behold him;
Hear him cry, before he dies,
"It is finished!"
Sinner, will not this suffice?

6. Lo, the incarnate God, ascended.
Pleads the merit of his blood;
Venture on him, venture wholly,
Let no other trust intrude;
None bur Jesus
Can do helpless sinners good.

7. Saints and angels, joined in concert,
Sing the praises of the Lamb:
While the blissful seats of Heaven
Sweetly echo with his name.
Hallelujah!
Sinners, here, may sing the same.
