Aliases: Humphrey Bralesford

Life

Born: 29 February 1658

Died: 1733

Biography Brailsford was born in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, and was a chorister at the minster there from 1672 to 1675. He was a precentor at Canterbury Cathedral between 1684 and 1692, during which time he composed most of his small output. He tried (unsuccessfully) to obtain a vacant prebend in 1708/09: there are surviving letters between Brailsford and the Archbishop of York dated from this time (also dating form this time is a letter from the men of the choir to the Archbishop urging him not to employ Brailsford, for "he is soe conceited and Imperious that our Choir will be made verry uneasy"). Brailsford's music was never popular (though one item was persistently misattributed to Henry Purcell) due to its rather inferior quality.
