- Im tiefen Boden bin ich gegründet;
- Ich ging in Walde so für mich hin;
English text
- Once when I walked through the fields so still,
- to quit life's turmoil, that was my will.
- There stood a flower at once so near
- that all my life saw I none so dear.
- I would have picked it, the flower to cherish,
- but then it whispered: "Let me not perish.
- In earth's deep darkness my roots are growing;
- I am content here, fine blossoms showing.
- I cannot serve you, I cannot woo you,
- O do not pluck me, yet take me to you."
- Then as I walked through the woods so still,
- I felt new striving, my life reviving, that was my will.
